Up here it's not that restrictive yet, not mandatory to wear a mask. And you can't find masks for sale.

You see a mix on the street, masked vs not. Many more asian wearing masks.

I found a few N95's in a box, have yet to use. They're sorta one-shot disposable? That's not gonna work for the long haul.

Also have a couple of more serious rubber masks that really seal, have replaceable filter cartridges. Cartridge number is something 100 IIRC.

A couple weeks ago I watched the Rifftrax version of the 70's made for TV classic, ''The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" staring a very young John Travolta.
Little did I know how perilously close to us all drifting towards similar outside environmental restrictions.

Give me my Space Suit, I want to do some gardening.

I see nothing funny about the story you relayed.
And I usually have a pretty "loose" sense of humor.

But in this case, it is absolutely, positively TRUE.
Not a cliche. Not partly true. It is a FACT.

In this case, being part of the solution means not violating the INTENT of the recommendations.

That is, not making contact with people outside of your "normal family unit" without taking precautions to not pass any pathogens around.
That's it. Simple. Easy to understand.
And if you are NOT doing that, then you are indeed part of the problem.

Sorry Sam, I still think you're taking it way too seriously.
It's a shared anecdote, about someone gardening ON THEIR OWN PROPERTY, and a Sheriff evidently issuing a warning about this being inappropriate behavior.

In my opinion, from the parameters given in the very short story here, the person was engaging in singular behavior on their own property. They weren't going off their property or engaging the general public in any manner. Or at least there is no evidence this is happening.
If someone approaches YOU while you're gardening on your own property...that' their mistake. But I don't think the person gardening in their own yard is part of the problem.

I mean, I know we are all wound up about self isolation, 6ft social distancing and trying to survive this trying time.
But if I see my neighbor, gardening in their own yard? All I'm going to do is wave from the porch, and I'm certainly NOT going to think my neighbor is contributing to "The Problem".

Which I acknowledged yesterday at #5 as possibly urban legend or fake news, and even hoped that it was such.

Kneejerkedly pulling out "risking their lives" to excuse individual misconduct among them is ...

I have to laugh. We are under shelter in place rules in NC. But the liquor stores and the golf courses are open. Not the restaurants. So I have played golf with 3 people who I know shelter in place with only their family (each is in the high risk category because of prior-conditions). We don't wear masks, maintain at least 8 feet distance, never ever touch anything anyone else has touched (I pick up my ball, you pick up yours).

I visited my son 50 miles away. Bigger city, more risk. Wore mask. I stood in the yard, he sat on the porch. We had no trouble.

All this with no one exhibiting symptoms.

I go to the grocery. Old folks hour. Limited number allowed in store. Keep distance. Wear mask and gloves. Wash hands and clean off everything brought home with wipes.

Received two packages on my doorstep. They sit for days before being opened. Cardboard.

But someone from my household and out in the yard. I've never heard of any restriction like that in the US.

I never excuse misconduct that is fact. Neither do I excuse those that author a false narrative. There are bad apples in law enforcement just like any other profession. To make a blanket statement that the majority do not know the job is ignorant. Especially when they are dying on the front lines as we speak. Would you like to speculate about how every doctor commits medical malpractice next? That would seem fitting for your agenda and false narrative.

Not a weird restriction...but a friend of my uncle said he was ready to go on a crime spree.

He's focusing on crimes where the likely punishment is house arrest.

    Your opinion.
Methinks that YOU protest too much.

This is a DEADLY serious situation, that in a very real sense is not possible to "take TOO seriously".

For instance......something that is almost never mentioned in ANY media, briefing or other commonly available source:
When it comes time for a "ventilator", are you aware that the procedure requires continuous general anesthesia ?
Which means, in effect, that you are in an induced coma for days or weeks ?

When I was young, I stuck my hand into a red ant nest to see what would happen.

Think I would have learned....not to go poking things that are not my concern. But, apparently, I have not...so with great trepidation....

I'm am jumping into this hornet's nest.

Can everyone just back away, calm down and let the "stuff" slide off your back and out of the forum. I don't mean anyone should leave, just let this particular disagreement fade away.

Reason I like this forum, other than it has helped me greatly with my Prius, as well as with "myself," is that for the most part, it has very little mean-spirited "stuff."

There is only one person on here that is on my ignore list -- and as far as I can "see" that person is not part of this current argument, which means I have not found any of you whom are part of this THAT objectionable :p:p:p

I would like to believe that all this in-fighting is partially because we all are likely a bit uneasy because of the "Great Unknown" that is smacking us all in the back of the head.

If there could be a short time out and if everyone could back-off, I know it would help me quite a bit.

There. I stuck my arm up to the elbow in the hornet's nest. Will a miracle happen? Will I come out with no stings??

    Kris

We are all engaged in doing something new, or at least new to us. Our leaders don't actually know what to do, they haven't dealt with anything like this since Polio got beat back in the 1970's. Directions from above are, lets say, "unclear". People are scrambling, organizations are thrashing as they try to adjust to novel circumstances.

Could some beat cop be harassing people because he likes harassing people, and this is a great excuse? Yes, maybe. Or it could be that he feels responsible for public safety but has somewhere around zero knowledge and training about epidemic management and is trying to follow his instructions as best as he can. I say if he flounders and screws up a little, cut the man a break. A lot of cops *are* getting sick while trying to do their job. Assume he means well.

Complicating the whole issue is that we have a lot of well placed people with agendas who are not going to let an excellent crisis go to waste. They have pre existing goals for tampering with society and you can see it finding its way into the new rules. This state closes alcohol stores. That one closes gun stores. Those over there close abortion stores, but "just for now". Others scoot criminals out of prison and back into the community, but "not the bad ones."

We are all of us caught squarely in the jaws of a dilemma. We live in a society where everyone and everything is expected to earn a living through doing some kind of work. This is reasonable. We also live in a society where a new plague is making the rounds. Normally we are not expected to go out and work if there is a high a chance it will kill us. The way societies dealt with this in the past is people went to work, and if they died, they died. Society closed ranks and went on. Modern countries try to do better.

What we all really need to watch out for is how the various powers that be use the excuse du jour to change the society we find when we all come back out. When the inevitable changes come around we must look at them carefully. What are you now forbidden to do? What are you now required to do? What laws now bind us that are so complicated that you can't understand them? What screwball things do they want to do my hybrid this time? There will be a brief time before things set when we may be able to push back.

In the meantime, cut that poor damn officer a break. He's already dancing as fast as he can.

What am I protesting at all?
Absolutely NOBODY is saying the current pandemic and corona virus situation isn't real or shouldn't be taken serious.

I'm just saying that I think your reaction to the genesis post of this thread, doesn't reflect an understanding of the either the tone, or the reality of the post itself. It's more about reading comprehension.

IMO it is a rather innocuous "rumored" anecdote. It's a situation specific, internet water cooler story, about someone gardening on their own property, that got a warning that this was evidently not acceptable behavior in this region. THAT'S IT.

I think extrapolating it out into either a indictment against false news or narrative...IS STUPID.
I think extrapolating it out into an indictment of law enforcement vs. personal freedoms...IS STUPID.
I think extrapolating it out into an indictment of a citizen doing anything that is incredibly abnormal or endangering of the community ...IS STUPID.

At this point I don't why or how IMO such an innocuous, post, that I don't think was ever intended to be "Protested" has become mired in such a STUPID debate.
I'm not protesting anything about the post itself...I'm protesting what I see as ignorant reaction and response to the post.

In my very first post in this oddly doomed thread, I said this:

" If I was the Aunt in your story? I'd politely call the Sheriffs office, explain what happened and ask for clarification on the current rules.
If the Sheriff is right? Then it would be good to have that confirmed.
If the Sheriff is wrong? Then that need so be communicated to him, so that people are not being "warned" when simply trying to garden on their own property."

And that's ALL I feel about it. IMO everything else is extrapolation of the anecdote to ridiculous extent, that reflects either extreme paranoia or simply poor reading comprehension skills, or both.

    " Gardening

Apparently it's a "no-go" just outside Cedar Springs in Michigan. Girlfriend said her aunt got "warned" today by the sheriff that she wasn't to be outside with the kids working in the garden in her own yard. " -from the original post

YOU want to PROTEST this IMO harmless, innocuous 39 word sentence as somehow having ANYTHING TO DO with ventilators, anesthesia or being in a coma...well enjoy your opinion and freedom of expression.
These all might be realities we are facing in challenge to dealing with this crisis BUT again read the 39 words, and it's about a woman gardening and getting a warning....that's it.

How or Why this thread got so derailed from I think original intent, and original storyline?

Well, these are tough times, maybe we should all just take a deep breath and stand down.
Whatever get's said or written after this post....
I proactively say, participation further seems futile, I will not respond. I pretty much said, what I wanted to say, in my original post. I invite anyone who has any interest in what I think about this thread to read my post #18.
Otherwise....I'm Out.....I'm going to do some gardening in my own yard.

Just put him in your "ignore user" list;).

He firmly resides in mine and I recommend others do the same:).

@fuzzy1 always challenges him and usually gets him to "I quit" commentary:whistle:.
