Ive been in isolation for almost a month and havent used the car. Ive been reading that the battery might be dead. Is it a goner then? Absolutely nothing works. When I plug it in, nothing. The car is open so I can get in, but the hatchback wont open. No lights will come on, its just completely dead. What exactly is the next step? I dont have an extra car to jump it and wouldnt know how anyway. I have a car service (like AAA, but not them) who would come out and jump it for me. Is that something that would work or do I need to get it to the shop? Ironically my 4 year extended warranty just expired this month. Is there anything else it could be?

    Thanks, Jo

I had it towed to the Toyota service center. In the future, how often do I need to start it and how long should I let it run? I dont anticipate going anywhere for quite some time.

    Welcome to Prius Chat(y).

This is the 12 volt battery being completely dead:cool:.

Start with replacing it and not trying to jump it;).

While you can jump the car, don't risk it:).

Good lick and keep us posted(y).

I'd start it at least once a week;).

You don't need to go anywhere, just leave it run in the driveway:).

But at least 45 minutes is what I would do(y).

Bear in mind that both of your batteries get fully charged when you plug in. Sorry.

Yeah but if you're not driving, the traction battery won't need charging, so if you plug it in nothing will happen.

The recommendation from Toyota Ireland for hybrids is to run it for 30 minutes every 15-20 days. Another option is to get a 12V charger to keep the battery maintained.

I checked with a voltmeter and the 12V continues to show a moderate charging state as long the plug is connected- even though the traction battery has finished charging.

The 2015 might have been on its original battery, which would mean that it was 5 years old and probably past it's 'use-by' date.

To avoid problems like this in the future you may want to consider getting a small inexpensive jump-pack and learn how to re-boot your car.

    Or?
Tow Trucks and dealerships work too.

    Pay now....pay later.

Really? I thought it stops after charging is complete, or at least soon after. I thought I checked but maybe I'm misremembering...

Anyway, conversely to the 12V battery, it's not good to keep the traction battery fully charged for long periods of time as it will accelerate loss of capacity, so I'd prefer not to leave it plugged in for weeks on end. And I know "fully charged" on these is only really 85% SOC or something like that, but still I would prefer to charge it only when I know I'm going to be using it soon.

yeah, i have to question that as well. i have checked it in the distant past, and there was no charging the 12v after the hybrid was finished.
and my evse shuts off, so i'm not sure where the juice would be coming from.

Did you notice that the battery was dead before you read what you read or did you read what you read and then go check your car? Just curious.

by the way... I went about 1.5years with out plugging mine in, only because of where I lived at the time. As soon as I plugged it in, I noticed it registered about 17 drivable miles without the AC or Heat on.

Why not? A simple drive anywhere for any reason will do the trick. Any type of vehicle will have issues eventually if left unused for too long. Treat yourself to a drive-thru treat or just a joyride through a park.

    Great suggestion!

Go to a small, crowded 'kitchen' staffed with lots of snot-nosed teenagers and have them hand you a 'Treat'.
    What could possibly go wrong?
As we all know, teenagers take this Pandemic very seriously.

Yeah... this is not the time for making any non-essential journeys, by car or otherwise.

As long as you keep your tongue in your mouth when you kiss the driver goodbye, you're probably OK. :ROFLMAO:

I have a serious itch to just go for a drive. Can't today or tomorrow due to Zoom meetings after work, but soon. Remember going for Sunday drives? No destination. Just watch the world go by.
