First time poster here but I have owned my 2010 prius now for 10 yrs..Never had anything go wrong..Car has 280K miles on it..I love the car it owns me nothing and looks like new and just hate to get rid of it..
    Problems:
1.) Doesn't happen all the time but on start up I get a vibration and knocking sound..If I press on the accelerator it clears right up..The car runs very smooth afterwards. What I find interesting is if I reset the error code the vibration and knocking either goes away for a while or is reduced by a lot..If I drive the car on a long distance and I come to a stop and I accelerate the car hesitates but then smooths out and then I am back to the vibration and knocking until I reset it again to clear the code..
2.) My HSI indicator will not turn on..This just started..

Things done to car since I have owned it..
1.) First spark plug replacement at 270K
2.) EGR valve replaced at 250K
3.) Normal maintenance, oil, brakes, etc..

I have been reading thru the threads and see that the 12V battery can cause these issues? I have never replaced it..

    Thank you for your help!

IF your 12 V battery really IS 10 years old (or more), then THAT is the first thing you should replace.......just because.
Then I bet if you search on here for "knock", you will get many pages of hits.

Here are the failure codes listed

    P0302--Cylinder 2 misfire
    P0301--Cylinder 1 misfire
    P0304--Cylinder 4 Misfire
    P0300--Random/Mulitiple cylinder misfire
    P0303--Cylinder 3 misfire

I had the battery checked and it's reading 12.6 v with 525 cold cranking amps..I am going to get a new one but was told it fine..

Checked the compression and all cylinders are at 150 on all cylinders and spark plugs still look new...

    Will rip apart the EGR..

The problem turned out to be egr upgrade that was never done on car. This includes a upgrade to the egr with upgraded harness and bigger pipe. It’s a recall from what the dealer told me. Here is the thing I brought the car to get the upgrade done and the dealer I brought it to never did it!
    Car running perfect now.

Do you know when this upgrade/recall was issued from Toyota?

Me neither, I've replaced the EGR more than once and it was never brought up.

Interesting. If there had been an EGR recall I would have thought it would be big news here considering how much time and work a lot of us have put into cleaning the damn things. What harness does this refer to? Which pipe got bigger? The pipe connecting the cooler to the intake manifold or the cooler itself? I'm most curious about what they did to your car.

Could you please follow up with more details? It would be incredibly helpful information to have on this forum.

At how many miles was the EGR worked on. Cus' it needs to be recleaned, every 50~100K.

On April 9, 2020 I had my EGR valve and pipe, intake manifold and pcv valve replaced. Did not solve the rough idle on cold start problem, but after warm up, it runs smooth as silk and my mileage went up. Check engine light has not come back on - yet. Been doing a lot of research on direct injection of fuel and the problems associated with it. Scary stuff on the carbon build up on the valves and injectors. With the amount of miles you have, could be an issue. Intake manifold too. I have a 2010 with 165K miles.

So it was on before, this is what precipitated the parts replacements? Who did the work, did they disclose the codes?

Ugh, all of those items are eminently cleanable. You can DIY all of that for near-zero outlay. Just the cost of cleaners, and replacement of the flexible gaskets, if they're looking compressed.

You say EGR "valve". The main EGR component is a combined valve and "cooler". The latter is upstream of the valve, bolts to the exhaust manifold. Was that replaced? If not it could be your problem. Of all the components it's arguably the most clog-prone. The "cooler" is highlighted here:

If you can scan and post an invoice with the part numbers that would clarify.

Stick to top tier gasoline, run valve & injector cleaners from time to time to keep the carbon boogey man away. Or go EV.

This entire thread is a bust and should be deleted. I'm pretty sure there was no EGR recall and what OP wrote about having a "harness" replaced and a "bigger pipe" installed doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Nor does the claim that they previously brought their car in to their dealer for the upgrade that was never completed. This thread contributes absolutely nothing as a resource and would just confuse any future viewers who might be looking into the issue.

Here you go: Has anyone cleaned their Gen-4 EGR cooler? What was its condition/mileage?

Related to this thread, everything "downstream" from the OP's EGR cooler has been replaced, but as Mendel notes, the cooler itself is still suspect. It's like getting a knee replacement when you still have a broken hip!

Ever clear a gutter, all the way to a storm drain? Say of leaves, snow, whatever? You've got to clear the full length of it: leave one bit blocked and it's all for naught.

I thiink main stumbling block is OP is not that savvy, had the work done by "someone", didn't get into it himself. Considering the wholesale parts replacement, might have been a dealership, sounds like their modus operandi. But not clear.
