I'm going to be test driving a 2017 Advanced tomorrow, and had some questions that I don't think it'll answer by driving.

    1. How well does the built-in navigation work? It'd be a shame if the big screen was almost useless
    2. Anything in specific I should look out for on the car?

    welcome!

    1) poorly

    2) charge it up, and see how many miles you can go before the engine starts.

    3) make sure you get an evse and two working fobs

    4) all the best!(y)

    My opinion on navigation ...
Database ok if you are not traveling in a lot of new developments.
Interface has too many options and are hidden in less than intuitive places.
Once you figure them out and have no need to change them it becomes less of an issue.
Clock is not coupled to the navigation GPS.
Not limited to the nav but the touch controls are sensitive and require too much attention if you plan to twiddle while driving.
Traffic warnings are overly aggressive. Lots of alerts for non problems. This are optional and can be turned off.
I like the ability to search for a destination via the entune app and then transfer them to the nav. I think the limit is 10 but you can reuse the slots.

Almost whole screen is a map in navi mode. If other functions need to be accessed, it will open on top of the map.

That being said, to answer OP's question from my experience with 2017 PRIME Premium with 11.6" large screen, the big screen was absolutely useless for me. For that reason, I traded in my 2017 Prime with 2020 PRIME LE with 6" screen.

Welcome. The Prime is amazing, but it also has some surprising annoyances. If you can get past the overly sensitive touch controls and the messages that keep popping up on the screens to remind you that the car thinks you're an idiot, it's a real joy to drive. I think Bisco pretty well covered the things I'd check for. And it you do get a chance to charge it up and check the range, remember that it will vary hugely depending on weather, driving pattern, and terrain. So expect anywhere from 20-35 miles. With a given location as vague as "US," you might be in anything between 8" of snow and the 82F we have here. ;) Don't worry, no one will steal your identity if you reveal your city. It's often really helpful to have that info when guiding someone through getting a malfunction fixed.

It can be the whole screen or it can just be the top half.

In my opinion, the nav is not even close to Google maps or any of the other decent phone apps. And when you're ready to update the Toyota maps you'll love their not-for-sale price on the updates. A Garmin with lifetime maps is way way cheaper. I glance at it now and then to check on upcoming streets if I know where I'm going well enough to not need GPS but want to cheat a little so I can slow down gracefully for a turn. But I never use it for navigation. Garmin is far better and it's closer to my line of sight. But it does have some nice features when it's not telling you that traffic is at a standstill in the unoccupied oncoming lanes. LOL!

I am fairly satisfied with the navigation on my 2017 Advanced. I noticed that if I am entering an address number and if, for example it is 12345 and only the numbers 3 and 5 are available to enter, that means that you have made an error on the street. You may have entered NE Elm St., when the correct street is Elm St. NE. Frustrating, until you understand how it works. Another thing I have noticed, particularly now when the main roads are mostly empty is that I will get a "Warning, slow traffic two miles ahead" or something similar when it could have said "Warning, No traffic two miles ahead". I assume that comes from the memory and is not current information. The HUD is also helpful showing upcoming turns when used with the Nav.
While the Nav system uses most of the display, the back up camera only uses about a third of it. I thought that was a malfunction when I first bought the car.

GPS not good; inaccurate, very slow to program (compared to Garmin Drivelux 51: full voice command)
Other features on Advanced like Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Monitor, Auto Hi Beams and wipers are great.
You've got to look at equipment list for Advanced for all the additional features only available on the Advanced. BTW, the Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror doesn't seem to do anything, though the buttons on it for garage doors, etc. are great! For me, the extra features were worth the extra money.
