Not to the question, but I hope it's late-mode, low-mileage, since for a few thousand more, you could have purchased new.

 

OP: What year???? How many miles? I'm with pjksr02, I'd be looking at new for comparison.

That sounds more like MSRP (+ destination fee), which is more aspirational on the seller's part, especially when things are turning down. Edmunds.com suggests its real selling price, their "True Market Value" minus $750 of incentives/rebates, should be about $24,500. And that may be stale, not up to date with the latest economic downturn figures.

So check out what you might be able to negotiate on a new one. For 30k miles on a used one, I'd want a better discount than $3k. (FWIW, I am neither a used car buyer, nor a frequent new car buyer.)

it's a personal decision. i like new, and don't care about bells and whistles. that doesn't make me right.

nothing wrong with a 3 year old low mile prius if you know the history.

no one can tell you what 6 months will bring, this is not 2008.

What are Primes going for?
You can probably get enough kickback money for one of those puppies to get pretty close to your buy-in.

I don't pay doc fees.
I just tell them to show me the bottom-line, OTD price and then shop that price with several dealers.

Financing works the same way.
I always walk IN with a pre-approved loan, usually from a credit union - although I'm always vague about financing when negotiating the price. When we down to financing, I give their finance person a chance to beat my pre-approved rate - and one time they actually DID, so I gave them the loan.

Car dealerships really ARE a little bit hungrier at the end of the month.....and the end of the year, but I suspect that they're going to be even HUNGRIER at the end of a pandemic.
Right now, some car buyers have cabin fever....unspent tax refund and stimulus checks, AND gas is something like $1.20 here and LESS in some places.
People are staying away from small sedans in droves, so I would not expect to pay anywhere NEAR "market price" for a car that the market doesn't like right now.....

why not pay 21.5k for a used prius? it's not like the msrp is 25k

 

MSRP for a Prime is 27K.
Kickbacks amount to at least $6,000 in the California for a NEW arguably BETTER Prius with at least some EV range....


....and THAT's MSRP.
Only uninformed buyers or people with very low credit scores pay MSRP for a car in good times.
Nobody should pay full bull when 30 million people are out of work and the economy is unwell.

you have to compare packages. prime is worth a look, but you have to know what you qualify for, and if you want a plug in.

nobody pays msrp, but we don't have the privilege of living in the land of the prii and home of the rave. they often pay close to msrp. even now, according the the new car deals thread.

6 months? if you can wait, wait.
