My 2005 Prius, 118,600 miles, started with an occasional engine clatter sound when going up a hill, but now it has the sound all the time and it's gotten louder. I lifted the hood and recorded a video with good sound that really captures the clatter, it's about 25 seconds long. Now if I can only figure out how to upload the video!

How much oil are you currently burning between changes?

How often are you checking/changing the oil?

Which brand/weight oil are you using?

How is the vehicle maintenance history overall?

Start up clatter is fairly normal with the tappets, but beyond that here are some things you might want to try :

    • Inspect the VVTI solenoid and filter for deposits
    • Quality engine oil flush
    • PEA fuel additives
    • Trying different 'top-tier' gas brands or increase the octane used
    • Use engine oils designed for low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) prevention, like a Dexos 1 Gen 2, ILSAC GF6, or SN plus rated.

Found a noticeable decrease in engine noise on one Gen2 after replacing the oil with a thicker flavor of Rotella T6 (older formula), your mileage might vary, and the long/short term potential for Catalytic deposits could be real when combined with overall engine health.

On the extreme end, it could be time for a lash check. Though given the reported mileage, doubful.

    Hello SFO,
Thank you for your reply, greatly appreciated! Here are the answers to your questions:
    1. How much oil are you currently burning between changes? A: Oil level is always full, haven't needed to add any.
    2. How often are you checking/changing the oil? A: Oil and filter is changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
    3. Which brand/weight oil are you using? A: I use Valvoline 5W30 conventional Oil, and always buy Chevron regular gas.
    4. How is the vehicle maintenance history overall? A. My Prius is babied, maintenance/recalls always done, garage kept. Very clean car and it has run impeccably, and super reliable, until this started.

Has any fault lights been on? Check engine light? Have spark plugs been changed at some point?

If the noise is there all the time can you tell where it's coming from? Perhaps just something like a heat shield resonating. Or maybe something like this topic: Noise abatement! | PriusChat If it's that you could just take the separated peace out by reaching it from under the car.

Its under 'upload a file' when you create the thread. I think it would be necessary to be more specific about what kind of noise.

    Hi Valde3,
No codes or check engine light. When the noise first started I changed the sparked plugs, and that was at 116,420 miles with new Denso Iridiums. The plugs I pulled out were original and they were in bad shape, I should have changed them sooner. The noise seems to be coming from the engine. I'm going over to Youtube next to upload the video with sound and them upload it here so you can hear the clatter.

I don't know what you did, but your link to your YT video did not work.

Upload the video to YouTube, then link to it in a post in this thread. Use the button with the chain-link icon (next to the one with an A icon) to create your link.

BTW, do not use the "Upload A File" button as advised up-thread.

Go on youtube and look up Prius Inspection. It will show you how to put the Prius engine in inspection mode where the engine will run non stop for diagnosis until you shut it off. Then with engine in non stop you can go over the engine while its running and see if you hear anything.

The lack of codes means whatever it is is mechanical and the check systems are not detecting it. Which tells me it may be engine pinging
based on your hearing it under load.

Try filling up with highest octane you can find see if that mitigates the pinging.

Your one of the few people who say the oil is ok and at the full line. But has the car ever run so low on oil it threw a check engine light? We see that alot here with subsequent engine damage. People have high mileage cars that eat engine oil and they never check the oil or its dealer oil changed which is bad.

What kind of oil do you use and who changes it?
