A preview of what we'll get soon as more crossovers arrrive (We'll get the Corolla Cross since the American Yaris is based on the Mazda2 and not the actual Toyota Yaris that Europe, Japan and China gets).

This sits below the Toyota CH-R and will compete with:
    • Chevrolet Trax
    • Hyundai Venue
    • Nissan Kicks

Looks good - much better than the C-HR - as it's got rear windows that passengers (and driver) can see out of.

Toyota has done it!!! This hybrid mini-SUV Yaris Cross has it all: excellent mileage, AWD for bad weather, a small enough size to easily park in urban places, enough clearance for a commanding view of the road, and the versatility to handle both normal work commutes plus offroad weekend trips well. And it actually looks good. I'll buy it in a heartbeat if Toyota decides to start selling it in the U.S.

    Very appealing vehicle.
Toyota with vehicles like this and its Plug In Hybrid RAV4 seem to have found a sweet spot in manufacturing vehicles that the customer wants and generate a lot of excitement.

“Handsome” cars only sell in Japan and maybe Europe, likely never come over the lake

You may be right, but that's really unfortunate. I need a car like this to fit into narrow, cramped parking spaces on some days and handle rough terrain on others, without having to worry about it failing. Toyota's consistently strong in the reliability department.

We won't get this as we don't even get the next gen Yaris (our Yaris will be based on the Mazda2... yeah I know.. doesn't make sense. Why not import the new Yaris instead? I guess cost of certification?)

We will get a Corolla Cross though.

It is simply about cost period.

Americans don't buy many subcompacts, and the margins are tight on them. Nearly no one has a plant assembling their North American subcompact car in the US because of cost. Mexico is the cheapest place to build for the market. Instead of building their own factory for the Yaris down South, it was far cheaper to invest in the huge one Mazda was making, and rebadging some Mazda2s.

Originally, those Mazdas were going to be Scions, but that failed. So in addition to cutting costs on their subcompact, the move also helps balance that for the books.

Any details re: what the Corolla Cross is going to look like, or is that TBD?

Soon as I clicked the links, I'm like exactly, the perfect car and I bet due to the collective level of stupid in the US market they won't be sold here. Then I scroll down and there it is, no plans to market in the US. I'll add it to my list of yet another example of everything that's wrong about US consumer market preferences.

TBD. I originally thought they might just bring the Corolla Touring Sports and lifted it an inch or two and throw body cladding and call it a day (think Impreza to Outback Sport or Legacy wagon to Outback).

But given that the Yaris Cross looks different than the Yaris, maybe we will see a different vehicle as the Corolla Cross.

no - have a look at photos side by side - this is quite good looking - the C-HR has so many ugly and incoherent profiles, I'm sure even it's mother is ashamed of it.

It sounds like we're getting the YARIS Cross - in hybrid and ICE. There was an announcement about the Corolla Cross - but sounds like only the Hatch, with a very compromised body (small boot, small back seat etc), and not a sedan. I'd have thought the Corolla Wagon Cross would be ideal.

    lol.

Although I will take the Corolla wagon as is... in 2.0 litre hybrid form please (even with the slight reduction in boot space).

    @Tideland Prius

So any idea if the Yaris Cross will ever come to the USA? It is the vehicle I'm really interested in...and of course, Toyota declines to bring it here.
