As I stated in the beginning I have no knowledge of volts/amps etc so that is why I don't "seem to grasp the importance of tenths of a volt when measuring a battery"

Now thanks to these posts I am getting a better understanding, but I will never have the knowledge of people who have a far greater technical understanding than myself.

I am not expecting the solar panel to ever put the battery back to full charge, it was bought as an experiment to possibly help maintain a degree of charge, but I now know it was a waste of money.

Until the current lockdown we have in the UK is over, there is no point in getting a new battery when the car is not being used.

Once I start using the car back on a daily basis I will look at things again.

As an update to this, I ditched the solar panel which although was gradually adding small amounts of charge I knew it wasn't doing enough.

I purchased a smart charger/maintainer which I left to do its business and my battery is now up to a healthy state again.

I actually took the car out at the weekend which was a joy as it had been so long since I last had a drive. Just checked the voltage now and its giving a reading of 12.56 volts so the charger has done exactly what I hoped and rejuvenated it.

This reading has been taken after the car has been sat for 3 days not driven or been on the charger.
