That it's not a hatchback ☹️ I'd have given $3k more (and 2 or 3 mpg) for a hatch if they made one.
I've said in another thread, if only they made a Corolla Hatchback Hybrid "available in the US" ! I'd have jumped on that !
Such a better looking car. And a little more trunk space as well.
It's funny, I hear people bash on the looks of Prius' all the time, yet IMPO, the only part of a Prius that looks dumb, is that it's a small car, trying to look like a full sized sedan

Other than this ^ it's a nice little car. Love the mileage. Not very insulated, but my aftermarket stereo system covers up the noise pretty well. And using a power converter, instead of an alternator, sure makes for a rock solid power source.... Albeit limited on the upper end.

Since I'm not doing rideshare for 2 months now, my Prius went from 1000-1200 miles a week, to about 50

Been driving my F150 truck, and spending way less on gas, than I was when doing rideshare in my Prius. Okay granted, I'm only driving 100-200 mile's a week now. But anyway.

The Prius is not a hatchback? (n)

Do you mean that the Corolla Hybrid isn't a hatchback?

Toyota that has a hatch on the back, but isn't a hatchback

I betcha this thread can get out to 30 pages on the finer points, but I figured these two pictures would cover a lot of ground.

    Hatchbacks rule!

    I'm a bit "confuseth"...
    The Prius IS a hatchback...
The Corolla Hybrid IS a hatchback...
And if the Corolla Hybrid isn't available in the USA, better tell Scottie Kilmer he just got one, and did a review.

If it has a hatch on the back, how could it not be a hatchback? 171697_HeadScratchingEmoji.jpg

    Well that sucks.
Damn you Scottie Kilmer for never showing me the back!
I agree, I'd want the Corolla Hybrid Hatchback..

Thank you. Those pics say it all ! The Corolla hatch just looks $3K better.

A person can call the Prius a hatchback if they want to, but its closer to a sedan, in which the rear windshield lifts with the trunk lid.

And just to make it clear, yes, they make a Toyota Corolla Hatchback. And yes, they make a Toyota Corolla Hybrid. And yes, they even make a Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback.

They just do not sell the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback in the US.... For some stupid reason, or else that's what I would have bought.

When I bought my Prius, I tried to make myself believe "it was kind of a hatchback" but it really just isn't.

Here are more non-hatchback cars with hatches on their backs:

    Now that last one..

I'd never thought of it before, but I bet Prius buyers are at least some of the same folk who were buying those Saab 9000s back in the day. Maybe there's something to this not-a-hatchback design...

The Prius is a liftback which is a subset of the hatchback category.

A sedan does not have the rear window lift up with the trunk lid (except for that one Dodge model that looked like a sedan but had the rear window lift up.... Dodge Aries?).

Basically, he wishes the Prius was a traditional hatchback

Traditional hatchback - I don't see how PRIUS doesn't match the market:

Or what is probably the first real hatchback (unless you count the Citroen Traction Avant pre-WW2):

For nearly twice as much you can buy an Audi Sportback. Audi says it has a "liftgate". Car and Driver, however, says it has "hatchback Practicality". So, it just depends on what words you want to use.

As far as the Corolla hatchback, It is an almost completely different vehicle than the sedan. it is much smaller than the sedan, 10 inches shorter, with almost nonexistent rear leg room (29.9" vs sedan's 34.8")

    Hatchback

Well it is... but I'm saying it's a liftback which is in itself a sub-category of hatchbacks.

You could easily call those you listed, hatchbacks.

But if you want to get technical, I would call the Skoda and Model S liftbacks, like the Prius. (One could argue the Model S is also a fastback to which I will not argue with that either).

The hatchback that the OP is talking about is more like the Golf, Focus, Corolla, Yaris, Fiesta etc. Small cars with a proper hatch.

This reminds me of the episode of Frazier where Niles complains that the rental car agency stuck him with a vehicle called a "hunchback".
Frazier has to explain that it's called a "hatchback".
Then Niles muses aloud why they would name a vehicle after it's most hideous feature.

Maybe - but it's one of TOYOTA's worst packaged cars - almost no boot - less than every one of the opposition, and smaller than the previous model. And the back seat is worse than the previous. Drives well, though.
