Make sure it is DC rated. The solar industry would be a good place to start. A real 80 amp DC fuse will not be cheap...there are a lot of stereo type fuses that I would not recommend.

I would say Maxi fuse, but really any fuse of sufficient rating, that you can also get a fuse holder for, that the fuse holder will accept the same size wire you are using.

Mine is from a solar array. It was 50.00 or so, with the holder.. But I harvested it from a used system (free)

A maxi and holder would work fine also, go to a heavy truck dealer and they'll have it in stock, cheaper than an a auto parts store

I have a Gen 2 ....would like to install inverter directly to 12 volt battery. Since I know nothing about electronics, I am unable to decipher the best option when people discuss this issue and have different opinions. I'd love to find a definitive 'how to' video.......or a place that installs them. I'd prefer not to muddle through myself only to see my prius vaporized in a explosive mini-mushroom cloud from some ill-advised hook up. Thanks!!

I did my inverter hook up this past few months and have already used it during a 24 hour black out.
Here is a video write up with parts list.

Here is my version of this mod.

The only change to my gen mod I would do is hook up the 80amp fuse switch to the end of the hook up cables attached to Prius 12 volt battery cable and not attached to the cables attached to the inverter. I thought if breaker trips because overload I wanted easy access to trip back the switch. So putting closes to end of the quick disconnect would be the ideal placement.
I was able to run a LG fridge full size, cable modem, TV, computer and few room lights at full load. Also the GenTrans switch was a safe way to hook power to the house without disconnecting the city power source for rest of the rooms not connected to Generator Inverter.

As others have said, the fuse it to protect the wire, not the device which (should have) its own fuse.

ANL or MIDI fuses are a good option, the glass ones common in cheap "audio wiring" are useless, as are the plastic resettable circuit breakers.
