A/C wiring pin bent and now hybrid warning light plus no A/C

    I was trying to replace my thermostat and couldnt get those difficult bolts off so I put it all back together and when I started it, I had no AC and the hybrid warning light was on. I knew the only things I did were remove two wiring plugs so I investigated and found the leftmost pin had been smashed down to the bottom. I was able to bend it back but now the problem persists. I checked fuses and no codes come up with the cheap Auto Zone reader. Im worried the bent pic shorted something but I just dont know. The pin does seem to be a bit shorter then the others but still should be making contact. Any suggestions?

    This is black wiring going into the compressor, the 12 volt wiring? The connection (atop the compressor) has been problematic in past. If the engine bay's been pressure washed or hosed down in anyway, that connector can be a little cup holding water, corroding.

    This is what I posted in another thread on the AC compressor supplied on Prius models.

    There is, however, one "Achille's Heel" with the AC compressor. It's the connector pins that corrode. When this happens, the entire electrical compressor is useless.

    Contrary to what some advocates say about dielectric grease, I fill both the AC compressor and water pump connectors with it. It keeps water vapor out of the connection. Pressure of the contact between the connectors displace the grease and make good contact, even though the grease is non conductive

    That compressor is variable speed and runs on high ac voltage from the inverter. Generally a pin that is just a little too short may not connect. It has to be pulled back or replaced. Then the codes need to be cleared. You may have voltage leakage as well which will cause a hybrid code. Really need to get that connector back to original or go to a salvage yard and get a new cable.

    Wow! Thank you all for the suggestions. So sounds like theres small chance of that having done serious damage. That's encouraging.

    I was scared to try with it completely unplugged. I thought maybe if one component was turned on and another was not (bc it was unplugged), that might cause some catastrophic failure...

    I will try to pull that pin out, was just scared I'd break it. Funny little star bolt head to replace the male harness plug though if need be.

    Think its ok to test for a minute or less with AC wiring harness disconnected? That would greatly increase my troubleshooting possibilities if I knew that I could just try different configurations of some wires connected and some not.

    Someone's been down this road before, and IIRC was not able to repair the pin connection atop the AC compressor. Again, it is the black, 12 volt connector we're talking about? Not the orange (high voltage) one?

    Yep. Black with about 7 or 8 pins. So requires new compressor simply for bad pin?

    That mighta been the outcome in previous case, sadly. Part of the problem was Toyota doesn't offer just that pin connection as a "part". Maybe just buy a salvage compressor?

    Check with a dealership service dept first, cus this apparently does happen from time to time.

    Again, culprit is poor design plus pressure washing.

    Honestly, that connector is part of the compressor. Even if it were sold separately (I mean, what car maker does sell component parts of their A/C compressors?), there'd be no replacing it without disassembling the compressor, and who does that?

    I mean, if the compressor gets replaced and goes into the rebuilt parts stream, and the rebuilder finds nothing else wrong with it, that's probably where it gets fixed. The rebuilder will have the parts and setup for doing that.

    The local auto electric specialty shop near me has rebuilt starters and alternators for me on site before. Rather than swapping in some no-name rebuilt from autozone or the like, I've left these guys my original equipment alternator or starter and picked it up later made like new. They have everything needed in back, takes them maybe 20 minutes once they get to it. I don't know if they also do A/C compressors. If there's a shop like that nearby, might be worth asking.

    Leaving that low-voltage connector unplugged won't hurt anything, you just won't have A/C.

    I filled the connector on my AC compressor, as well as the connector on the water pump, with di-electric grease to prevent water entrance and corrosion.
