I’ve read through this thread hoping to find an answer. My Gen 2 is locked up, the key fob won’t let me unlock as usual and the key won’t unlock it either. I last drove the car two nights ago and I have a new battery, 6 months old.

I’m trying to figure out what would cause the car to lock up after 11 years of driving it.

I have used the key to unlock the door but it’s been several months. @dolj on this thread recommended maintaining or lubricating the key. How do I do that? If I can’t unlock the car in the morning I’ll need to call AAA to tow it out of my garage and take it to the mechanic. I am due for a service but have put it off because of the pandemic.

Anyone out there to help me tonight?

Does that mean the key won't turn, or that turning it has no effect?

If it won't turn, the mechanism probably just gummed up and needs lubrication. Don't be afraid to blast plenty into the lock, but don't leave the residue on the paint. It'll take some force to get it to break free even then. The key doesn't have a very big head, so you're probably putting way less twisting force on it that with an old fashioned car key. Still, don't twist so hard you break the key. As I recall, it needs to turn a full 90 degrees.

If it turns but doesn't unlock, then something fell apart inside the door and you'll need AAA or a locksmith to open it so you can take off the inside door panel and investigate.

The key turns but would not unlock. I have to get the car out of the garage immediately so someone can gain access to my attic.

Can AAA handle my Prius? I’ve had a bad experience with AAA once before. Not many people have Prii where I live.

What @bisco said. They have pros for opening car doors.

Reading this thread reminded me to use my mechanical key in the lock to be sure it would work if I ever have a dead battery. My key only turned 45 degrees from vertical to lock or unlock the door and would not go any further in either direction.

I didn't want anyone breaking their key trying to get it to turn 90 degrees.
