I just did a one hour "exercise the Prime" route around town:).

I did 25 miles with 28% battery left when I pulled back into the driveway;).

Just another data point for comparison(y).

    You’d think, eh? Grumble...

25 miles was about the lowest I’d seen until the lockdown hit. But it was at 25ish for a year or so, charging 4.6ish KWh, then eventually jumped up to 28ish (5.7ish KWh) for a year. After the lockdown hit, it’s been sitting at 21-22.

To clarify the nature my commute (before the lockdown hit), possibly 20-50% of my daily commute, depending upon traffic that particular day, is at moderate highway speeds, 1/3 at residential-ish speeds, and the rest bumper-to-bumper or at stop lights. I generally see fewer actual miles than the GoM predicts if there is less traffic, meaning that I can go faster, and therefore lose more energy to wind resistance. It’s usually reasonably close though, within 5-10% or so.

During the lockdown, we’ve ironically burned a lot more gas (still very little, of course) since we’ve gotten into joyrides, about 35-60% (thereabouts) on electric and the rest in hybrid mode. Commuting, I can drive 19 miles to work, charge up then 19 miles home, all on electric. These joyrides are in one fell swoop, so too far for one charge.

That might be the best bet! Thanks, Drash!

Sorry, idiotic question: “PID” = ?

(Fair chance I know what it is, but just don’t recognize the acronym.)

I'm sure you do. In some cases, it's Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. In other cases, it's a Proportional Integral Derivative device. It turns out that you have to be fairly specific when you google "PID." LOL! For our purposes, it's a Parameter ID. The code you read when you use a code reader. ;)

    Ah, thanks.

Computer engineer, historically in the area of writing software to model or to design-test CPUs in the Automotive Market, although more recently more along the lines of security-related firmware for embedded devices.

My immediate association was with Process IDs, obviously not likely correct...

We recently got an email from a young friend in college and it was riddled with acronyms that were apparently specific to their school. We had no idea what they were going on about.

Around my work place (Industrial Engineering, mostly mining industry) I'd always be hearing mutterings about P&ID's: Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.

FYI: After bottoming out (for now anyway) at just over 20 GoM miles range (which again, for my driving habits is usually pretty close — 5ish% over), it’s back up now to just over 23. Our home charger doesn’t have a readout of KWh charged, so I don’t know where that sits.

I picked up the OBD Fusion app, but, as with the Carista OBD dongle, I haven’t had time to experiment with it yet.

I just got OBD Fusion, too. I'm still trying to get it set up the way I want it. Very nice app, though.

There’s two areas that you’ll be interested in: Dashboards and Logs. Dashboards are interesting if you slap them on an iPad so you can see in real time what’s going on in the Prime. Nothing is saved for those. Logs are where the action is really being done and where it writes the CSV files. Typically you can only monitor 4 different sensors but you can log many more than that. Logging is a two step process so you first have to hit Logs after connecting to your dongle, and then hit the play button to start showing and recording logs. I typically show Engine Speed, Generator Revolution, Motor Revolution, and Compressor Speed which is all in RPMs. I chose those because its a single scale. I have monitored different items such as power or voltage but I usally keep the displayed logs the same since it it’s easier when monitoring single scale values. For motors you can choose between MG1 and MG2. Generator is typically MG1 for me but you can choose MG2. Compressor Speed is the A/C compressor as I’m interested when that’s being used during winter and summer. I typically do not play with the other items such as Monitors, Diagnostics and Performance (it’s a Prius after all).

I was going to do that but it wanted me to pay again for the Prime PIDs. I suspect that it's because I installed the iPad app before I bought the extra features on the phone. I just uninstalled it from the iPad and reinstalled it. I'll test it in a little while.

I just took a quick look at the logging. I'll need to play with that some more.

Using the iPad would be great but how do you manage it when driving? Do you have one of those floor mounted holders?

Yesterday, it went up to just over 26 miles. A few days before that, however, it briefly dropped a little below 24.

When you say, up or down on EV range, are you stating the GOM reading with a full charge or actual EV miles you drove from a full charge to empty? Either way, 1-2 miles EV range changes happen all the time on my car. One thing is that on GOM, it is very easy to lose the EV range after a single bad day of miles/kWh, but it is very difficult to bring the GOM range back up. It takes many good days of miles/kWh to bring GOM back to where it was.

That’s the GoM reading, but for my particular usage at least, the GoM has been overall fairly accurate — on the order of 5%ish optimistic. However, I checked it about a month ago, and in fact it was within a few tenths of a mile.

Sure, few-mile fluctuations are not uncommon, but there’s a definite overall upward trend toward recovering range lost for no particularly obvious reason.

Unfortunately, our home charger, while simple and robust, doesn’t have any readout of how many KWh are charged into the battery. Nevertheless, the ChargePoint chargers at work do. Also unfortunately, I’ve been working from home for the past couple months and will be for the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, I’ve historically seen a pretty close proportionality between the number of KWh charged and the ups and downs in the GoM reading. The main thing that’s changing seems to be how many KWh it’s allowing to be charged into the battery.

Now that I’ve had my car for a while, I’ve had weird things pop up that I’ve never experienced before, like having it go into CHARGE mode when the hybrid mode kicked on after exhausting the battery - noted in another thread. That and even though I have my 11” screen set a particular way, it gets changed from time to time. Or the proverbial reboots of the screen. I fully believe they still have a few software bugs floating around and probably in a “fail-safe” mode such as in @mr88cet case. If the computer gets it’s numbers scrambled from a sensor, the computer guesses in a conservative manner. Might be time for me to use my app to monitor the various sensors.
