Got my new Prius Prime LE paperwork done at the DMV yesterday. To my surprise they sold me an alternate fuel sticker to place on my front windshield. Any plugin passenger vehicle pays $37.50 a year, all electric pays $75. Best I can tell it's to make up for lost gasoline tax revenue. Not the kind of state "rebate" I expected.

Yeah, that’s a bummer. My take is that Tax Law should be defined not only to raise revenue, but also to encourage efficiency.

    Which State (or Province)?

Yeah, this is a practice at several states, and the discussion comes regularly here.

Yep, IMO those type of penalties are ridiculous.
My feeling would be, I'll pay my $37.50 or $75 dollar lost gasoline tax revenue penalty, right after you pay me my cleaner air, lower carbon footprint bonus of equal or exceeding value.

You can usually count on the government to extract payment through every orifice for any "benefit" they create for you, but every benefit you create for them will be gratis, of course.

Hopefully don't cross the line into FHOP, but did these taxes start up soon after the last presidential election?

No. Oddly, the seem to be most severe in "liberal" states like California, where it's $100.

State of Ohio had just started $100 additional to hybrid vehicles and $200 for EV..
