Gear selector DIY

    Hi I would like to show you one little thing I created my self since I could not find available one... Or when I found it was extraordinary expensive... Soon I will upload photos and vid during operation in car... All it needs now is primer and paint! To be installed... A fiew words... The car gear selector uses hall sensors to sense the position of the magnets on gear stic... The hall sensors outpot voltage..like potentiometer would do.... there is an emulator that after you chose gear it simulates the movements-change of voltages for x axle hall sensor and y axle hall sensor... It plugs in the selectors plug... And voila... Soon more to come! Image.jpeg Image%20(1).jpeg

    Now you need to put all the equipment into the same size package and then mass produce it
    for $20-50 dollars. :)
    I think you will find the reason the one that's out there is so expensive! :whistle:

    Are you going to put it in your car?

    Yup... I've tested it already but I want to make it a compact unit now... There is no reason to produce it for 20 USD... Anyone can diy... It... A complete kit will be like 50 to 100 depended I am not Chinese factory to mass produce...it is custom.... Otherwise it is too much time. For nothing... ;) but it is not going to be for sure 300... It can not believe it... Why that much? For a factory mass produced item... Anyway as soon it is completed I will represent it... And maybe create a diy foolproof tutorial for anyone interested to do but do not know how to... ;)

    You've missed my point. There is a REASON it cost so much.
    But, if YOU can make a "kit", and make it cheap. You can make the other company
    lower it's price.
    It may look and seem simple, but it cost money to put it all together.
    So far you are the only one that I know of that has done something like this.
    I doubt that anyone else will, maybe a few. But it will cost too much money and time to produce it.

    I did many protypes to reach the one that I used... Including many materials... Well this particular is pla and the middle is epoxy resin the letters in center indicate the chosen"gear" but it is the fastest and easiest material for that since it is going to reinforced by epoxy and paint...

    You could also reach a different market segment if you consider making ones that is just shift buttons, not shift buttons and a giant logo, much less a giant logo that lights up.

    If I buy an auto part, I want an auto part, not a banner ad. I might not be the only one.

    If you want your advertising displayed in my car, make me an offer.

    Beat suggest similarities... I can see 250 differences when you put side by side buy for 300 or make yours for 50 USD...

    this is very cool, I'm trying to replicate this myself, do you have an schematic or any sort of documentation I can follow, I'm guessing this uses a resistor ladder to output the correct voltage for each gear. I have a 3d printer so the STL file will also very very helpful.

    Although it might be possible to use a resistor ladder to drive the input voltages for the ECU it did not work properly in my case it seems that the ECU expect to sense the right voltages but in correct siquense...

    But that might change after some firmware update (by dealer) or it might be different in newer model mine is September of 2009 (3rd gen but one of the very first cars arrived in Europe)

    So in my case I simulated the voltages by using some generic microcontroller board(arduino that drive through pwm an small 100mah transistor with capacitor with resistor)

    So when driver choose any of the 4 modes it simulates the voltage slopes and the order in Which the ECU expect to see (as if you move the lever to select )

    e.g. to put the car in drive mode you have to move the lever to the left and then pull backthen return in opposite order to rest position etc...

    As regards the STL it is made for specific switches so you might have to change the diameter to fit yours but this is going to happen after I recover my old files (I had a Nas-corrupt event so they are not available at the moment...) The last version of printed mount I did mounted except the switches the microcontroller board and everything in a small package which takes the place of the original lever's assembly under the plate! So it is a plug in replacement...
    At the moment I recovered only these two photos of my unit while testing it in my car, I did not took off the original lever just in case, only the plug. Where I plugged mine...     Great, thanks for the explanation, I will give it a try, the arduino sketch will also be very helpful. I found this picture that specifies the voltage levels of the original shifter but I dont know if this is the one for the gen 3 or the gen 4.

    Any updates for this thread? Sorry to bump kind of an old thread but I just got my Prius and one of the things I was thinking of doing was moving my gear selector to a different location (One of the empty button panels most likely) so I can change the center console even more.

    I was thinking of setting up a microcontroller or similar, like an arduino, to get the process done but it looks like it is even simpler than that maybe?

    I appreciate it!
