Hey everyone, this is a great group of enthusiasts. I just started posting recently, but have been reading here for a while. I always like seeing when people post pictures of what they're doing so I decided to post some I took.

I recently bought a 2008 with 200k on it. I wanted to learn about hybrids, and what better way to learn than be forced to maintain one!

When I changed the plugs (put in new Denso SK16R11's), I took a bore scope and had a look at the cylinders to see the condition after 200k. I have no idea how the car was treated prior to me. Opinions and commentary welcome, especially anyone who has comparisons.

First photo is of the piston crown with the reflection on the cylinder wall. Second is an (out of focus) of the entire piston crown. Quite a bit of carbon/oil. Anyone had luck cleaning these without removing head?

Next two are of cylinder wall. Good clear cross hatching with a few vertical lines. I didn't stick my finger in the cylinder, but I've heard that as long as the vertical lines aren't fingernail deep they won't cause serious issues.

Last two are of top of cylinder, "up" is to the right. One shows lighter intake valve, and the other shows the darker exhaust valve. I assume intake is light/clean because of Atkinson cycle movement of vapor/air across it each cycle. These shots used a side mirror which doesn't focus well.

    Enjoy!

Excellent post. How much oil are you burning (if any?)

I've only had the car a few weeks and just put fresh oil in it. I am going to monitor it to see how much oil it drinks. Thanks for the links and comments.

Just as a follow up: I signed up for the account at Toyota and entered my VIN. This vehicle has all the history from 0 to 115k miles. It got oil every 5000 miles and all the recommended services at each interval. And the work was done at the local Toyota dealer. From 115k to 199k, there's no history at Toyota. Maybe if I decided to pull a CarFax I could find more, but it's good to know the first 60% of its life it was well cared for!

A long term follow up: this car uses barely any oil. I do the oil changes myself and monitor the oil level from time to time, and I rarely have to add oil. So I guess the amount of wear on the cylinders is not terrible in this case.

Yeah, if you look our car up on Toyota site, it'll say it's never had an oil change. You have to take that info with a grain of salt. Too, a car that's got full service record at Toyota, might actually be neglected: owner's that are averse to DIY, have the dealership do everything, maybe never check the oil. And the dealerships likely just pull the drain bolt, but never check the level beforehand.

Glad you did the follow up post. Those cylinders looked just fine to me. I would be running high mileage blend in it and change the oil every 5000 miles and see you at 300k or when its time to work the battery pack.

Thanks for the update, Sorry to bump old thread. Prius 2nd gen battery last about 10-15 years depends on the temperature we live. newer generation especially 4th gen, last at least 15 years (15 years warranty in some countries). For the oil consumption issue, 2nd gen does not have problems. My 220k miles 2006 Prius only consume 1/4 quarts every 10k miles/year with full synthetic German Castrol 0w-30. My 3rd Gen 2015 Auris (using prius engine) does not consume oil in 10k miles/year period but it only has 60k miles. I used Total or Shell gasoline and 0w-20 Castrol Edge or Mobil1/OEM. I have not checked the cylinder with boroscope since it is pain in the nuts to access the sparkplugs without removing cawl.

Do you plan to try Fuel Additive with high PEA contents like in Gumout All in one, Redline, BASF Keropur G, Techron, etc? I believe that helps for such deposit although takes few thousands miles to get reasonable cleaner.

My G2 has run Redline 5-30 engine oil for years and you can eat off the valve train area its so clean. Really good oil I use it in all my cars.

I bore scoped my G2 around 125,000 miles and I see bare metal on the top of the pistons no soot at all. I take that back they all have a thin circle of soot on the piston tops. Thats good oil.

    Here's one:

Thats a good sign of good engine oil that keep piston rings lubricated and clean. However, my questions was about redline fuel system cleaner not oil. I am wondering if any of you experience light detonation/pinging at light load. Not at full throttle or low load.

Your pictures of cylinder wall is a sign that your cylinder is almost like new. You still see crosshatch pattern from the honing in the factory. Worn engine usually has no more sign of cross scratch patter anymore. After all, Only Toyota and Honda makes really strong aluminum alloy and steel for engines. They are hardly any wear even after 300k miles.

Would too weak piston rings be a factor too?
