Next time opt for the pressure washer;).

Done in 15 minutes and no mess or potential broken wires in the cooler(y).

DFF81551-A9C0-4B53-9B97-1B59E8B7EE70.jpeg Just got the fuel injectors cleaned. But upon inspection I noticed the plastic tip is missing off of one. According to the injector shop it was off when I brought them in. Surely this just didn’t pop off? I’m assuming I will have to replace this injector if I can’t find the piece. I’m actually more worried about it being stuck inside head or falling somewhere into the engine

What do the tips on the others look like? Do they get near the actual nozzle, shape the spray? Just wondering what their purpose is.

Bit of a sandpounder if you'd need to replace an injector for want of that cap.

I've been thinking about this thread off and on, keep wondering if all the filthiness was just on the outside, the injector was flowing fine.

And in this (short) video, I notice the plastic cap is missing, doesn't seem to bug him:

That’s it. He said that they are flowing well with a good spray pattern. I don’t think I should reuse without that cap

On ebay there is kit you can buy to clean your injectors. It is NOT the best, but how often will you use it?
Auto Car Vehicles Tool Universal Fuel Injector Flush Cleaner Adapter DIY Kit Set 4683812326351 | eBay

You could "rig" something with a small tank you could pressurize and fill with carb cleaner and back flush the injector.

You should get another EGR cooler, then soak the original one in GUNK, or carb cleaner and seal it so it won't evaporate. And maybe check every day or so. Also try the pressure washer. If it has turned to the hard carbon, you may need to glass beed it. But I think the soaking in GUNK or OVEN CLEANER for longer times should work, eventually. I would NOT use gasoline! TOO flamable!

The caps are there for a reason, I "think" they are there so align them, not for the spray pattern.

If you clean out the wells where the injectors seat, and use some vasoline on the seals, they will go in without a problem.

Would you all advise trying them as is instead of spending the extra $110 to replace the one?

Do I use vasoline for the seals or will any petroleum product?

You could go to Toyota and see if anyone there can give you an answer. Or call the guy who cleaned them.
WHY didn't he mention that one was missing? Why didn't he have one to put on it?
You could use silicone spray, or oil. Just a light coating. I've used both and never had a problem.
Maybe even WD-40. Just something to help guide them in. Rubber against metal won't allow it to slide.
Thus FORCING it into place and possible cause the seal to get damaged.

I brought it to his attention and he said they didn’t carry any of those pieces and he couldn’t get them. He said check with Toyota. From my dealings with Toyota I’m sure the parts guy won’t know. I’ll look for it when I get home but I doubt I find it

    Maybe the manufacturer?
It's been decades and I just can't remember. Sorry.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe they effect the spray pattern. Maybe someone else on here will give
you and answer later in the day/evening when they get off work.

Toyota repair manual says to lube with gasoline or "spindle oil". The latter is really hard to come by: I looked it up and seems to often come in 5 gallon pails, lol. The guy in the video mentioned "gear oil". I've read vaseline a few times (besides just now, here) on BobIsTheOilGuy.

I happen to have hypoid gear oil, 80~90 weight, something to try.

I spoke to a guy at denso. He said it was a seal...I wasn’t impressed with his knowledge and looking at the end of the other pieces it doesn’t look like a seal. He also couldn’t provide me with the part

The good news is that the injectors are fairly accessible without a lot of engine disassembly. You can always reinstall and see what happens.

I'm only done about a hundred or so injector replacements and cleanings but never had any come back.
Just figure out which is the easiest place to install it. And "IF" you have a problem in that area, you know
    what it is! :)
I don't care what Toyota says on this, DO NOT USE GASOLINE!
WD-40, silicone, clean engine oil, sewing machine oil, grease, etc. SOME type of lube.
It it ONLY to allow the rubber seal to slide into place. Once it's seated, the lube does nothing.

Maybe you can talk with Rich again? He replaces those screens and caps routinely in his restorations. He might be taking a family break from doing the restorations, but maybe he'd still be able to steer you right, or mail you a cap.

Sorry for bringing thread back. Do you think an oil catch can could be helpful?

Yeah it will help, some. Keep in mind an OCC is not an "off switch" for all the debris coming through the PCV hose. It helps, but they vary in effectiveness, and even the high end ones don't catch it all. But for sure will reduce it.

I keep thinking too: injectors may look grotty, but that's on the exterior. Maybe gently cleaning, brushing along the tip towards the front, never backwards, is pretty effective. If they are clogging I'd speculate it'd be more due to gasoline impurities.
