PLANO, TX (May 29, 2020) – The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime will break ground as the most powerful and quickest RAV4 ever, hitting dealerships this summer with a starting MSRP of $38,100. The RAV4’s first-ever plug-in model has up to 302 horsepower with an ability to do 0-60 mph in a projected 5.7 seconds, which makes it the quickest four-door model in the Toyota lineup. But, it doesn’t end there. The RAV4 Prime also has up to a manufacturer-estimated 42 miles on battery alone on a single charge, making it the highest EV range of any PHEV SUV on the market. The RAV4 Prime also has up to a manufacturer-estimated 94 combined MPGe. Even more, what sets RAV4 Prime apart is the standard Electronic On-Demand AWD.

First revealed at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2021 RAV4 Prime will be available in SE and XSE grades, both emphasizing athletic on-road performance and premium comfort and style.

    SE Grade

The SE flaunts its sporty attitude with 18-in. painted and machined alloy wheels and an exclusive front grille design with a front lower spoiler. Piano black exterior accents and a painted grille/diffuser complete the premium look. The SE’s equipment is quite comprehensive, with standard:

The available Weather & Moonroof Package (+$1,665 upgrade) is chock-full with upgrades like a heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats and rain-sensing windshield wipers with de-icer function, for added convenience.

    XSE Grade

As on the current RAV4 Hybrid XSE, the Prime version (starting MSRP of $41,425) of this grade stands apart with an available two-tone exterior paint scheme pairing a black roof with select colors, including the striking new-to-RAV4 Supersonic Red. Other standard features include:

    • Exclusive 19-in. two-tone alloy wheels, the largest ever offered on a hybrid RAV4
    • Vertical LED accent lights
    • Paddle shifters
    • Moonroof
    • SofTex®-trimmed seat surfaces
    • Qi-wireless phone charger
    • Ambient interior lighting
    • Auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink universal transceiver

The standard Audio Plus system comes with a 9-in. touch-screen, the largest ever offered on a RAV4. There is also an available Premium Audio multimedia system that includes Dynamic Navigation (3-year trial included) and JBL speaker system.

Available options for the XSE grade include

Looks like an easy choice to make if you want a hybrid suv, this seems like a much better deal than rav4 hybrid, escape hybrid or phev, outlander phev after the tax credits. Strange choice only having a 3 kw charger. I rarely go over this range in a day (probably 6% of days) in my bev, and this looks really good for most.

Except this qualifies for the full credit.

    In Canada, there’ll be a $10k difference (M3 SR+ is $56k base while I expect the RAV4 Prime to start at $44-$46k)

Plus any state/local incentives. So for me in Texas it would be $10,000 off compared to any Tesla @ $0.

Does the RAV4 Prime give up the spare tire?
We have the RAV4 Hy which comes with a (pretty big) mini-spare, and they say a full size spare fits in no problem.

We just took the first long trip...had to do some care giving to my elderly mother...ugh well I am still have trouble sitting for hours but it might be me, jog so much I have tight muscles etc.

We would not have wanted Prime due to new model and annual car taxes in northern Virginia would make Prime cost more after taxes than hybrid, over the years. The tax delta would be roughly 5% on the incremental $10k value per year in my region. So we have the opposite: a negative state incentive for new cars.

At the L.A. auto show, it was mentioned that it does have a spare tyre but so far, we don’t have anything else to go by. No images or video.

2020 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid price set, will arrive before Toyota RAV4 Prime
The escape phev is priced lower but has lower range and a lot less power. We definitely have gone from having one mediocre plug-in (outlander phev) to a lot of choice with the rav4 prime, escape phev, and tesla model Y coming soon or already here. This is the biggest auto segment in the US. I expect the model Y to do best but the rav4 prime to do very well, and of course rav4 in all its varients will outsell all the mid sized suvs and be toyota's best seller in the US.

The more models the better. I’m probably not the only one interested in features other range and speed

    Air Cooled (only) traction pack?
Pretty sure the pack will be ~18ish kWh's as that's the necessary amt to get the full $7,500 fed credit (presuming you owe that much tax end of year {plan ahead!} and you don't fall under AMT exclusionary rules).
But packs of that size mean more heat - if pressed into relatively small areas.
Sure would be great to hear it has CHAdeMO ... but not likely?

No driver's seat memory? I'm surprised since the premium package includes just about everything else that is included in the regular Rav4 hybrid limited tech package.

The InsideEVs piece said the over 40mpg estimate comes from the WLTP, and the EPA hasn't been finalized. I hope Toyota hasn't moved away from under promise, over deliver.
Ford was saying the PHEV early this year, last year. I'm sure there is a delay now, but that will go for everyone at this point.
The Escape PHEV is up on their site.
Sounds like they will be chilling the air with the A/C, and there is a fan.

Wait, you know the limits of air cooling, but want it to have CHAdeMO?

Hybrid packs are much smaller than plug in ones. As size goes up, the ratio of of surface area to volume goes down, and the surface is where the heat transfer takes place.

but toyota has done phevs well so far, and ford, from what i've seen. i wouldn't be concerned with it unless i got burned by nissan ;)

not sure japanese factories have been closed as long as us, but that would be state by state as well.
