AC not working, codes 76 and 23

    AC just blows hot air and the compressor cycles on, making a clicking/rattling sound for a second, and off about three times then quits trying. Am getting AC codes 76 and 23. An initial freon pressure was 0. Added just a small amount of freon and the pressure shot up and stay high. No change in codes or operation. I believe that the compressor needs replacing. Is there a way to test or confirm that my compressor is in fact bad before I replace it? I hate fixing the wrong problems.

    Am looking at a $220 reman compressor on ebay. Anyone have any other suggestions for a fix of my AC?

    Have you looked up what the 76 and 23 codes mean yet? (That'll be in the repair manual; more info.)

    Anyone experience similar codes and problems with their A/C? Am hoping to avoid fixing the wrong problem with the replacement of the compressor. Also, the controller was replaced which fixed fan operation and the A/C problem started upon controller replacement.

    Ok, the section in the repair manual for B1423 has four pages of workup steps that will tell you how that system functions and how to test to determine whether the problem is to do with refrigerant charge, the pressure switch itself, wiring, or the AC amplifier.

    The section for B1476 gives you a couple more pages of steps to troubleshoot between your cooling fans, refrigerant charge, or compressor.

    As an aside, it can be important to look in the right model's repair manual. I noticed the text you copied above for B1423 says "pressure sensor", which might have come from a Gen 3 manual; Gen 3 Prii have a pressure sensor, Gen 2 (and Gen 1) had a pressure switch, and if you're looking in the right manual for a Gen 2, it does say switch.

    Thanks for the advice, it looks like my next step is to jump 1 and 4 in the pressure switch connector. However, I believe that if the pressure switch was bad, the compressor would not be cycling on and off a few times.

    Just get the compressor already. Got a reman compressor, with oil, on ebay for about 200 and a drier. Was not able to install drier, anyone have a 1" hex? Charged the freon and now driving a refrigerator. I have no special gauges or vacuum pump, so I skipped those steps.

    Are you saying you therefore took it to somebody with the right equipment for those steps? Or that you just squirted a bunch of refrigerant into the air-filled system and called it good?

    There might be room in @lech auto air conditionin's signature.

    I just squirted a bunch of refrigerant into the air-filled system and called it good. And it is good and cool.
