Would temporarily painters taping my front bumper and hood from rock chips and bugs be a good idea?

I made my way to South Carolina from Sacramento, CA. It took me 38 hours. We drove nonstop. I wanted to see if it would be a good idea to do a blue painters tape wrap on the way back. It would take me about 4 days to get back since I’m stopped somewhere for a couple days.

FIL said it would mess up my clear coat.

I wanted to do the front bumper, half of the hold and rear view mirrors.

    Any advice is appreciated.

There is a bra you can put on and take off when you don't need it.
The tape isn't going to last long and will probably eventually come off...

Easy peasy my dude, spray it with plastidip. My bottom bumper lip has a few coat so rock bounces off the rubber coat, peels off with common solutions in the garage.

This is common on track cars when people don´t want stone chips, etc.

OP, assuming the car isn't freshly painted you can leave it on for a couple of weeks with no damage. If the paint is fresh and hasn't had enough time to cure completely, the tape will likely pull it up.

Masking tape should be ok for a few days; it's designed to peel off without leaving residue. What if it rains though??

Off topic but anyway: one time, I applied masking tape, just for a few minutes (other car decades back) and when I pulled it off it took the paint off. Turned out the (near-new) car had sideswiped a bollard at the dock, had a fast/cheap paint job (one side completely sanded down and repainted) before delivery to dealership.

In BC: the standard bill of sale has a clause saying the new car may have incurred up to 20% of it's retail value in bodywork before it needs to be disclosed.

If you're ever in that situation, keep in mind: until you sign, it is not a legal document, and you're free to cross that clause out, say amend it to $500 max, for example. You may need to twist arms, dealership might protest, but probably will go for it. If not...

    Just cus it's pre-printed doesn't mean it's unalterable.
