Sheltering in place unfortunately left my car parked in one location for a long time, and yup... MFing thieves got it. Unfortunately 2006 car so only liability insurance, and the worst thing... I live in California. Needless to say quotes in the range of $2500 for to replace, and another $400 for some steel plate, just make this a no win situation. So I have no desire to throw $3k for this, and I'm wondering if there's anything of value that I could get for the car to apply it to a new one... a NON-Toyota one because I'm sick and F'ing tired of this "California CARB" carp that preventing me from using a relatively inexpensive after market converter.

Have a replacement sent to a friend or family out of state, then they ship to you. Cut the pipe and clamp it. I've passed three tests with a replacement.

any particular brand you went with? I thought the smog test verified a stamped number on it or something that says it's CARB compliant.

I did have a thought though to use an out of state cat assembly for a few hundred bucks, install it myself, I just passed smog within the last couple months so I got a 2 year window to get some more life out of my car. Then possibly sell it, in Nevada or someplace and just move on.

Yes it does, but from what I gather the Prius is in a unique case in that no after market cats have ever gotten ok'd for use in California, where as other cars have, or maybe it's just true with hybrids. I do not know. Either way, I don't see news articles about rash of thefts involving car-X. Just the Prius, and specifically this model of Prius, probably due to ease of theft.

My understanding from this forum is the Gen2 has a larger cat with more of the precious metals in it and is located in a fairly easy to access spot on the vehicle. Add in the fact that it's an older vehicle and thus more likely to be street parked so it's a more tempting target.

Magnaflo is who I used. But there's several brands nowadays for fairly cheap.
The gas station that handles the smog doesn't look under the car as far as I know. So I've passed 3 times. Knock on wood. Lol

Probably because there's not enough clearance under the car normally and they don't want to spend time to put it on a lift. Now that you think of it, last time I went guy looked in the hood, but didn't put it on a lift or jack it up at all.

Wonder if they flag it in the computer as to why it failed smog though, i.e. do they say "illegal cat.converter"

I would think they'd flag it in the system, I'm sure that's what there suppose to do. But they don't repair or make money on it so incentive is just doing there job. Lol
