    Hello,

I have a 2005 with approximately 360,000 miles. About 5 months ago after I pressed the power button to turn the car off and there were no normal sounds coming from under the hood. The next morning when I started the car I noticed that the trip mileage was reset and the clock was off. This would happen sporadically over the past few months, sometimes back to back.

My battery is about 6 years old that the a dealer installed. I have seen videos on how to use the screen to enter the diagnostic screen and check voltages on the battery. With one press of the start button I'm getting 12.0-12.2 volts, entering the accessories mode I get about 11.3 and with the headlights, A/C, and break lights on the voltage drops to 10.9. And when I start the car it goes up to 14.1.
I don't get any error codes, so would this be the signs of the battery going bad?
If so, any suggestion on a battery manufacturer.

I have also noticed that a pump that is on the front right side of the engine, pumps almost consistently. I believe that it is the pump for the coolant. Would this indicate that the pump assembly needs replaced?

it's getting down there. hard to say how much life is in it. you could get a load test free at an auto parts store. they also carry batteries.
there's no consensus on the best battery, because there's no testing. i threw in another oem for $200., even though pep boys had one on sale for $150.

Driver's side, right? The inverter coolant pump is down there, but it should be running constantly, just not making much noise. Check the coolant reservoir next to the inverter when the car is in IG-ON mode (2 presses of the Power button, without your foot on the brake.) You should see movement (some say "boiling") in the coolant in that reservoir. If you do, the pump is still functioning, but if it's making noise, it might be on the way out.

Other than that, there is a pump in that same area that fills the Coolant Heat Recovery Canister (thermos) which does make some noise, but that should only be evident for a few seconds after the car shuts down.

What I suspect you are really hearing is the brake actuator/accumulator, which is more toward the center, next to the firewall. It will normally run for a few seconds upon entering the car and then sporadically as you are braking, but only in intervals a minute or 2 apart, if it is functioning properly. If the accumulator is leaking, however, the actuator will start running much more frequently, a few seconds apart. That means trouble. The part is quite expensive if purchased from the dealer, but the labor charges to replace it are what will really kill you. If that is indeed what is making noise, you will eventually see the ABS, VSC and Slip Indicator lights glowing on your dash. At that point, you will need to do something or possibly lose braking function. Your best course of action would probably be to look for a used part at a wrecker and hire an independent shop to replace it.

Thanks bisco. Checked with dealer and they want $229, Advanced Auto want $200. Might go with the dealer battery for $30 dollars more, knowing it will fit properly.

Hey davecook. I thought it might have been the brake actuator and about soiled myself when I saw the price, but a few weeks ago when I stopped in my driveway it was still making the noise so I lifted the hood and it is differently coming from the drivers side behind the headlight. I know that the pump is working as I did see the movement in the reservoir.
