Sure, the harm reduction can be effective in lessening the severity of the pandemic. But the article negates each account for the use of harm reduction techniques as not working in this country by enumerating perfect examples.

convincing people to wear masks for the riskiest scenarios - countries that have succeeded have been the ones that have had real political and public will unite.. Are we?

need for getting the message just right - there's an absence of consistent messaging from authorities, many rumors and conspiracy theories can fill the void, and that makes it very difficult for people to figure out what it is that they should do.. Can we avoid this?

monitor the amount of time that they're engaged with the media to make sure that they're checking trustworthy authoritative sources .. When more people in this country rely on Tweets and reTweets for trustworthy news, how are they going to monitor this?

they need to record a test positivity percentage below 5 percent for at least 14 straight days - the CDC and the White House said that states can start reopening after falling below 20 percent test positivity.. The economy first is favored by many, that's a sad truth.

evidence-based interventions that can restrict the coronavirus to low levels - Yet, flaws in messaging are threatening this progress.. Yeah, if I only read Twitter, I will miss the message.

The bottom line is it really is about leadership.. No comment needed here.

This virus has already won in the sense of moving from rare animals' lungs to much more abundant lungs. Just as previous jumpers to humans have won by acquiring more maker space. Smallpox and polio are among the few losers in this. They pissed people off too much.

Viruses are indifferent to human consequences - at least that is my philosophical view.

Humans have already lost in the sense of many deaths, persistent injuries, loss of economic activity, and deferred responses to a wide swath of other medical matters.

At present it seems that much future losses along those lines depends on policy and public responses. Harsh to say that most (countries') rational responses have already happened, and irrational responses will dominate later acts of this drama. Harsh and, I hope, inaccurate.

    ==
Viruses have no 'concept' of future. They have portability and genomic-editing powers, AND NOTHING MORE. This COVID (may have) made a bad 'choice' by pissing off people, with ill consequences for itself and many other ~100,000-atom genomic editors that evolution has provided.

It would be most interesting (and possible) if these ~100,000-atom genomic editing balls change human responses to zoonotics in general. It would be their largest imaginable effect. Viruses have been editing genes since ... whenever. Humans started about 20 years ago. It is unique to be alive now and see how it goes.

So .... in a County of over two million, the increase put around 200 people into either the ICU or on a ventilator. 1 in 10,000 ? I don't know how bad that is, weather at Half that much or at double the amount.

That is, "around 200" by adding the "ICU" and "ventilators" figures, which summed to 197 in the chart iplug posted for 6/21?

The same sum was 338 yesterday, 6/26, though the county population did not grow to 3.4 million in the same 5 day period, and probably won't grow to 5.8 million in the five to come.

On the bright side, I got the sense from today's news that the state won't be insisting on following the exponential path after all, so maybe they'll get those numbers back onto some other trajectory ... after however long it takes for today's decisions to affect future hospital admissions.

I once tried garlic to control blood pressure. The pills did not work. So I started eating raw cloves . . . no luck. But even after taking a shower, I offended myself and gave up on that experiment. However, I may restart that approach.

Alabama has relaxed the COVID-19 rules and rates have more than doubled. With enough garlic, I may have more luck maintaining social distance.

OK, we are back to the exponential growth phase again. The second wave is going to be worse than the first one it seems.

see, there's another inconsistency in messaging. scientific/medical authorities on if/when/maybe second wave.
not that it really matters, it is what it is

agreed, but the article says we can win, not we will win. the title, 'here's how to stop the virus from winning', is enumerated, and adittedly, we hve mostly failed so far.

Hopefully people will pull together and do the social distancing and wear mask but it does make you wonder. Maybe a first step would be to get people to actually stop at stop signs and red lights!

In Japan in 1987 when we went to Japan for work training we noticed the many people wearing mask. Our trainers told us they had colds and the mask were to protect others. To not wear a mask when you had a cold was considered impolite - impoliteness would be the highest form of social disgrace in their culture.

We had the hardest time convincing them that in America a violation of work rules required consequences like loss of pay or written warnings etc. In their culture it was unthinkable that if a company that paid your wages and health care asked to do something you simply would just do it out of honor.

Our culture now days ( the individual need trumps the need of the many) may be facing a tough road ahead in the pandemic.

My apologies ahead of time for the philosophical bent and if I offended anyone.

Certainly would be interesting to see the numbers. I am guessing high numbers of positive anti-bodies

The latest Tesla software does that automatically and by default follows the speed limit. If that testimonial about the superiority of Tesla Autopilot and Full Self Driving offends anyone . . . I've got mine.

It's not necessarily any nominal number or ratio, but many things including a hospital's ability to cope with surges. When numbers get too high, problems happen with staffing and potentially ventilators. Ventilators can be setup in the ER if ICUs fill up, but staffing has much harder limits. All this effects COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients.

On a given day the numbers may be manageable. As below, ventilators and staffing are currently meeting demand. The problem is continued exponential growth which can turn things into a disaster in just a week or two if this does not taper off soon.

    The latest numbers:

That is exactly what our Governor and State Doctor told us- The virus is everywhere and our job as citizens is to do our role wearing masks and social distancing to keep the curve as flat as possible so the state can manage care for those who need it.

The Governor and Doctor said there is no avoiding the virus, it is everywhere - it is how you manage your risk and minimize it to yourself and fellow citizens - it is being a good neighbor and caring about others health as well as your own..

today was a good day for a few of the surging states, let's hope it's the beginning of a trend.

Or just those in positions of power and influence taking the weekend off to golf, again.

Hope, also, that it is the former, but fear it may be the latter . . .

My third PCR test result was negative again. With the opening of the economy and summer vacationer many from out of state flocking around, even with biweekly testing, I don't feel much relief from a negative result.
