After I saw the Eco Diary display in some discussion threads and then found it in the manual, I finally got to it in my car. I was confused because I was expecting it to be on the main console screen, not on the MID screen. Is it only displayed on the MID or is there a way to show it on the big screen.

But, when I finally found the display, all the values were zero! I've had the car for just over a week and have filled up once. Why is it zero? I did not reset anything that I know of. There is information on the trip displays.

Have you set the current date yet? That would be the culprit if you did. If the car thought is was October 2015 an you just set the date to March 2016, you would not be able to find the data.

How do you set it? I came across the Calendar screen and it was set to today's date so I didn't change anything.
It was showing current dates on the Eco Diary screen, but all the data were zero.

That is odd. Did you reset the history accidentally? See page 131 in the manual to learn more about the Eco-Diary. See page 143 regarding history reset.

Thanks for bearing with me. I am having a really hard time getting all pictures to upload, even though I've compressed them. Anyway, I think I've messed up because I'm getting some really weird readings. The first time I was on the history screen, it was showing 14.1 mpg as Best and 54 mpg as Average. It didn't make any sense so I pressed the Clear button - I guess I should have just pressed Update. So I think this is what messed up the rest of my readings. For example:

I know that my average fuel consumption is around 54-44 mpg because I reset Trip A when I first got my car (it had 36 miles on the ODO) and the tank was full. When I filled up, it had 550 miles on Trip A and I used just over 10 gallons, so I had approximately 55 mpg on the first tank - I don't remember what the display read but it was probably around 57 mpg. I am still on my second tank and the average mpg is showing 54.2 mpg (see second picture). But if you look at the first picture, the ODO shows 720 miles and an average of 78.6 mpg. There is no way it can be 78.6 mpg because I've already used at least 12 gallons of gas, so I think it still thinks I'm on my first tank of gas. Also, while I was driving, on the ODO screen the Average mpg reading kept going up and down, between around 74 and 80 mpg. On Trip A or B, the average only varied between 50 and 54. There is no way the average can change more quickly over a longer distance.

On the Eco Diary screen, you can see I am now getting a reading for March 21 (yesterday) but zeros for every day prior to that. The March 21 reading should be for today, March 22, because I didn't go anywhere yesterday. So I must have somehow messed up the calendar too.

On the history screen (on main console display), which I was unable to upload, It shows Best as 199.9 mpg, Average 78.6 mpg. Then there are 4 bars, 3 green and 1 yellow
    • The first bar is for 3/17-3/17 and is at the maximum (150 mpg).
    • The second bar is for 3/17-3/20 and is about 50 mpg.
    • Then there is a big gap.
    • The third bar is for 3/21-3/22 at about 50 mpg
    • Fourth (yellow bar) is 3/22-Today at around 75
So, do you think I messed up my readings because I pressed clear? Thank you for trying to see what's going on and I'm sorry if my descriptions are really convoluted.

    My theory--

You lost the daily MPGs because you accidentally reset them ON THE SMALL SCREEN.

In my fiddling experience, the clear button ON THE BIG SCREEN does not deleted the daily (or monthly) registers. It does reset a starting point for the MPG that will appear on the same line as your odometer. In my case the odometer registers all the miles on the car (obviously) but the MPG on that line is what I have achieved "since the first day of Spring" because that was the day I reset using the clear button on the big screen.

i wish I had not hit "clear" on the big screen so I would still have a lifetime MPG -- oh well.

I had a gap on the bar chart on the big screen too-- I think that was because I hit "update" without any meaningful distance having been driven. Now I update with each tank (one could update at any regular or random interval they want, of course)

Moral of story -- if I am right:
    1. Don't screw with the update or clear setting on the small screen -- set it and forget it
    2. Don't clear the big screen if you want to retain a Life Time MPG -- but it not a huge loss if you do just associate the MPG since reset with another meaningful starting point
    3. Hit update on the big screen in any way that moves you -- for me it's with each new tank. Gaps in the bar chart will go away.

Thanks I believe you're right. I don't think I cleared anything on the small screen (I don't think I know how that would be done) but I did clear the history on the big screen so screwed up my lifetime mpg, which is really annoying because that's the new feature that I really like! It's also something I cannot correct. Oh well, it will level out after I've driven a few more thousand miles...

I use Trip A to track gas mileage for each tank so reset A when I fill up. I use B to track actual trips.

Now I'm more confused than ever! This morning when I turned on the car, I switched to the ODO screen and it showed 0.0 mpg. I drove it for a just a short distance, long pressed the trip button, and it went back to zero. As I continued driving, the mpg pretty much reflected the mpg of Trip B, which I had reset at the beginning of the trip, as well as the current trip-from-start screen. So, I thought, okay ... it isn't measuring cumulative mpg, just the current average, and resets every time you turn it on or press trip reset and has nothing to do with the odometer reading. So I was both disappointed that it doesn't keep lifetime averages and relieved that I hadn't screwed up the calculation when I cleared history on the big screen.

BUT, when I started the car for my drive home, it did not reset to 0. Instead, it was displaying 57 mpg - around what I had when I turned off the car. So..... I have no idea now what it's basing the reading on. Maybe I had accidentally long-pressed the trip button when I had displayed the screen in the morning... I don't know.

This is my current ODO reading. I think the 58 mpg is the actual average since I reset by long pressing the Trip button while on the ODO screen. I have not hit the Clear button on the big screen since that first time I hit it. I would imagine Clear would probably also reset the mpg on the ODO screen. The screen to the right seems about right. i.e., after long pressing the trip button, I have probably put in about 5 hours of drive time. So I think as long as I don't inadvertently reset it again, the figures would be pretty close to the lifetime average.

And I think I fixed the ECO diary sort of. I have lost the first week or so because I had cleared history (or reset something), but now it's recording my daily statistics. I had to adjust the calendar - it was a day behind so wasn't recording correctly.

from time to time our DIARY display keeps disappearing - we are age 75 and 76; and trying to get the Diary display back appears to be "above our pay grade" - help!
