We have a 70lbs golden retriever that we want to bring on "short" (<2hr) road trips. The plan was that the dog would either sit/lay on the back seat, or we would lay the back seat flat and give him the entire hatchback area to sit/lay in.

Well the first time we introduce the dog to the car, he insists on standing on the center console and keeping his head as close to my face as possible. Like having Chewbacca sitting on your shoulder, completely impossible to drive like that. And him standing anywhere in the back, on the seat or in the laid-flat seats, he completely blocks the view in the rear-view mirror. We were forced to have the s/o sit with him in the back seat to try to force him to lay down. Of course he preferred squeeze down onto the floor and burrow himself like a gopher as much below the driver's seat as possible, but at least I was able to drive and see out the mirrors.

So we are trying to figure out how the best arrange the back area both for safety and practicality with the dog. My first thought was to get one of the mesh cargo nets and run it across the interior of the hatchback to create a psuedo-crate, a netted area to keep him from jumping up to the passenger and driver areas. But that will not keep him from standing up and blocking the driver's rear view. I was also thinking of trying those seat belt harnesses.

What has everyone else come up with for this? Any good solutions for securing Fido in the Prius C?

based on another thread I found, I am going to try one of these "dog hammocks" which completely covers the back seat.

Yeah my dog is 100lbs and still fits in the rear fine. Just remove the shelf in the back. They eventually lay down.
