My win10 pc did an update when shutting down last night, and boot up this morning opens new Windows Edge. The only thing clickable on my monitor says something like "getting started" or "take the tour". No "X" to close, or "no thanks" or "not right now".

Ok, have it your way: start my tour (why do I feel like I'm buying a time share...), and mercifully on the second page there's a option to bail.

Hmm, see there's a new desktop icon for Edge, AND a new Quick-Start icon on the task bar. Handy...

Think I'll double-click the CBC streaming radio icon on desktop: uhoh, which browser would I like to open that with. Perhaps Edge? Oh yeah.

Back in firefox browser, I'll click on this pdf link: oh, would I like to open that pdf with Edge?

So, since I can barely move the mouse around the desktop without hitting an Edge icon, why don't I just give it a try. Hmm, lessee what happens when I start a new Tab. About what I expected. Any way to change that to a Google search? Apparently not. Not easily, anyway.

Around this point I started swearing, just shut down Edge, lol.

On my old windows laptop which I am currently using as a single task stream contents viewer connected to our 48inch LCD TV, I am using Edge. Using only for stream video viewer, I don't need to enter my log-in credential for my other browsers. For my work, I use FireFox. For home use, I use Chrome on a Chromebook, but I also use Brave for secure browsing.

Microsoft Edge is one of the built-in apps that cannot be removed on the same way how we normally remove apps. In line with this, if you still want to remove the app, I suggest that you use Windows PowerShell. Before you uninstall the app, make sure no other programs are running aside from Windows PowerShell (Admin).
    1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and S at the same time, type powershell and click Windows PowerShell. Type in the following command: get-appxpackage *edge*
    2. You’ll be able to see the detail location of your Microsoft Edge.
    3. Type “remove-appxpackage” in the Powershell window. Hit the Space button on your keyboard. Then copy the address next to the item PackageFullName and paste it after the command you just typed in. This should remove the app.

Hadn't thought about uninstalling. It occupies somewhere around 10 GB's?

I'd assume next win update itd be back?

On our computer I disabled the file path for edge and removed the shortcut icon. It was over a year ago.

While I know it is still there it is not accessible and I've actually forgotten how to make it accessible again.

We were having problems at the time with software being able to interact and filter Edge.

A beef I have with Microsoft is how they decide to stop supporting software and say everyone must move into a new software. I purchase Microsoft Office Suite for my work and the kids schooling. I keep the software and feel no need to buy each new iteration for Microsoft Office. We received notification that Microsoft will no longer support or offer updates the the version of Office we have - no worries they will gladly update us to the newer version of Office that is comparable to ours for a special price of $399.

I understand software updates and design has cost but I don't understand telling customers that they need to upgrade and their purchase isn't supported anymore.

We are fortunate that our kids school provides licenses for MS Office for their students so we can load that on our computers as long as the kids are in school.

Microsoft warns: Office 2010 support is ending so buy Office 365 ProPlus | ZDNet

I don't believe I can ever forgive Edge for my first experience with it when setting up my first Win10 machine.

Within seconds of opening, Edge served up a phishing spam advertisement, masquerading as a Security Alert! claiming that I had a security problem and needed to call MS Support at this 1-800 number. Sorry, I recognize this type of fraud and have already had a couple friends scammed by it. Close Edge. Restart it, and immediately get another one!

At that point, instead of using Edge to download Firefox, I copied a Firefox install from my old machine to a thumb drive to transfer over. F*** Edge.

    ==================

Now, I actually do sometimes use Edge, but only very sparingly, when wanting to look at something with all my normal security blocks turned off.

My machine hasn't yet caught up to the Win10 update of this thread. When it does ...

I think it was in 2008 or 2009 that I fired those people in Redmond. Part of it was their aggressive stance on the browser. But the straw that broke this camel's back was once again having to authenticate my purchase of Windows and prove I didn't steal it. It said there were too many hardware changes. All I did was connect a new printer!!! How many other businesses make you prove you haven't stolen their product ... again and again? The woes of people who are trapped and can't fire them sometimes almost bring me to tears.

I'd probably have done that too if life here wasn't so deeply embedded in their food chain.

Long ago at my old company, my department was properly dogfooding our own company's products (from other operations, not our own). But top management wasn't, ending up forcing us to also have MS products in our cubicles. Choices that made it look like they owned more MS stock than our own stock. What does it say when top executives use MS software in place of their own products that they are trying to sell to customers?

We were not unhappy when corporate splits separated us from them. But it was already too late.

We have a small office here. Only seven of us. Two have to use Windows because of needing to use Quickbooks Enterprise. One of them uses his Mac most of the time, though. He's an uber geek who was a Windows guy till they adopted a teenager with a MacBook Air. She dumped pop on her keyboard, so he fixed it for her. In messing with it during the repair he fell in love. LOL! He and I and the executive director all use Macs and I have the recording studio set up with a Mac. They really do just work. The others always seem to be coming to us for help getting some new glitch handled on their Windows machines. Admittedly, MacOS isn't perfect, but what a difference!!

it's hideous experiences like this that keep me mirroring all of our network's drives, & keep us on Win7, & assuring the next update will be to Lenox.

Yeah two internal drives here, and Robocopy (in a batch file) to periodically mirror personal files.

I keep almost all of my personal data on a separate external hard drive connected to my home network and some on the cloud. I can access most of the data from any platform, Mac, Windows, Chromebook, Android phone and tablet, iPhone and iPad.

Try Linux instead, a variety of distribution copies have been available for years. I like the Ubuntu distribution but there are so many to choose from, you don't have to wait any longer. ;)

Just got this update, and Yes, suddenly my computer is Marlon Brando as the Godfather, and I'm being, quietly intimidated and told, that it would be wise to use Edge as my browser.
I don't really care what browser I use but after reading some of these posts, and peoples "troubles" using Edge, despite the strong armed you must use Edge message my computer is now giving me, not sure I want to use Edge.

    I'm sure I DON'T want to use Window$. ;)

Because of my job, I'm forced to use a couple M$ products, but I'm sure glad I don't have to use that operating system (or Edge).

I have used Google Chrome for years. Using it right now. Edge has less junk ad controls. With Chrome I do. In fact, I installed the free Duc-Duc Go app to chrome to eliminate those annoying ads at the bottom of the Priuschat pages. It works!!, no more ads from my last purchase at Homedepot.

I got the update. After the pop up, just unpinned Edge from the task bar and start menu, and never a peep since.
I also have never activated Windows on this computer.

It is a new Edge. Not sure how Microsoft could let know without it being annoying.

Just shut down at the end of day. With Windows laptop I am using for my work, I find keeping the system on makes it get slower and slower, eventually needing to reboot at the most inconvenient timing.

OTOH, my Pixelbook with Chrome OS is almost never shut down. I let it sleep by close the lid when I am not actively using it, but it comes back instantly when I open the lid. It uses very little battery power while sleeping.

You may have to eventually disable sleep mode so you get a clean shutdown and startup. Then you can enable it again. If you use sleep mode a lot, you will eventually have problems. You never start a fresh session/clean state using sleep mode.
