    Hello Prius Chat

It is getting close to time to purchase new tires for my 2012 Prius Five

I am a sales Rep that covers TN/KY/MS/AL so needless to say I drive a LOT

I purchased my current tires at Discount tire in October of 2018 with 44k on the car and now i'm almost at 89k - I am not extremely happy with this performance considering how much the tires were

The current tires are the Michelin Primacy mxm4's

My models size is 215/45-R17 17 wheels

Please let me know your suggestions

    thanks!

What are you looking for in a tire? I assume long wear since you cover several states but anything else?

Take a look at the General Altimax RT 43's. They're about $96 on Tirerack.com. Rate highly for grip in wet and snow and are warrantied for 65k miles. I've had a set for a couple of years that now have about 40k on them and they look like they will be good for at least 60k, maybe more.

Here's an old thread about them:

Tire life is the most important thing. With all of the driving I do I would like to minimize how often I buy tires. I treat my tires well with rotation and balancing them when they need it. If it helps with gas mileage that’s a plus but it’s not as important to me as how long they last.

I have M Defenders from DT with almost 40,000 and they look Great... lot's of tread... but I do rotate my tires at least four times a year.

I just purchased the Bridgestone Turanza QuietTrack for my Prius. Stock size, on sale at Firestone for $104 each. For the record, they are much quieter than the Goodyear tires that came with the car.

FYI: Those are the wrong size tire for your car. They should be 215/50-17.

I think you've got a regular Prius (level 5 with 17" rims and various other options), not the larger Prius v, that was introduced in 2012?

With 45k miles on the Primacies you're not happy with them, their performance? Can you give more detail? What's their tread depth currently? Wear is even, what's their condition? How about mpg?

I switched to the same tires, spring before last, from OEM Michelin Pilot hx MXM4. Found the Primacies quieter (which is fairly typical, for any new tire), the ride a bit cushier. They feel fine, steering feels good, cornering uneventful.

One negative: mpg initially took a big dip, and still is off a bit.

In which case, my post above about incorrect tire size is, well, incorrect. The size I mentioned is for the 17" wheels on the V wagon.

I'm on my 2nd set of 15" Michelin Defender T+H on my 2015 Prius.

First set of Defenders lasted 67K miles and had 5/32nds left on them. Was on track for hitting the 80K warranty rating. Unfortunately picked up a large screw in sidewall of one so replaced all 4.

I only drive dry/wet in California with occasional light snow in mountain passes. Defenders have lowered my Mpgs a bit but they handle great....for a Prius. Could get a bit better handling with a Summer Tire in California but Defenders have been a nice compromise between Mileage Rating of 80K and handling for an All Season tire.

I also rotate/balance about 3-4 times a year and keep pressure at 38 psi on all four.

Waited for Costco to put on Sale and price matched over at America's Tire.

    Sadly Defenders don't come in 217/45R17. :(

    My door panel says P215/45R17

My from tires are currently at 5/32 and back are 4/32

I was looking at the Yokohama Avid Ascend LX but am really open to suggestions. Given the time and milage on my current tires I am not extremely satisfied with the life of the current model im using

Maybe downsize to 15", they would last longer and more comfortable. Just get a LRR tire. Used 15' are a good deal.
