rattle in the back

Check the license plate holder; mine was loose and caused a rattle before I got my plates.

The other common problem, besides the license plate discussed above (I suggest foam weatherstripping) is the back seats. Unlatch them, fold them down, then slam them back into locked position. Can't hurt and may help.

 

I'm 8 months with my 2006, 29k miles. I'm a little disappointed by a couple off/on squeek/rattles up front.

My Ford F250 went 7 years, 111k miles and didn't have dash squeeks.

The mpg is great and that was the main point in buying the thing, so I travel on..

 

I have a 2005 with a rattle in the back, and I tried the seats, the license plate (including adding bushings to the mounting screws), all the removable plastic pieces in the back, as well as the hidden compartment cover locked and unlocked and the tire changing tools. Finally, in desperation I let my girlfriend drive and got back there with the seat down. The rattle appears to be coming from either the top of the rear window or the hatch hinges. Has anyone else seen this problem or have any ideas? Looks like I'm going back to the dealer, because it's a very annoying metallic sounding rattle. It doesn't always occur, it seems to happen once the car is warmed up and on the road for 10 minutes or so, but it's piercing and seems to be getting worse.

Thanks for the response! I have checked the tools and the license plate, the license plate in considerable detail because that's what it sounds like, but not the heat shield. I should have been more specific in saying that the rattle seems to be coming from the top hatch hinge or the top of the rear window. Could a heat shield problem get "referred" to the top of the hatch?

 

On my '04 the back windows rattle when they are down about 2-3 inches.

I had a rattle at the back that drove me nuts
I took all the trim out and still couldn't find it
But I did find that it would always happen over a certain bump in the road
Got my son to lie in the back and he heard it coming from the those small triangular windows - the part that's nearest the hatch.
Try wedging some felt/small bit of carpet in between the window glass and the trim.
That did it for me.

I hate rattles !

 

Since the rear rattle problem for the most part appears to be resolved (I also had the rattling license plate,) my Prius has developed a rattle up front.

Found the cause to be the plastic trim running down the A-pillar. By tapping on it with my fist, I could duplicate the rattle. It was coming from where the A-pillar trim met the dash. Inserted (wedged) a small piece of foam between the trim and A-pillar, problem solved. Lots of places where plastic meets plastic and rattles can develop. Rattles in any vehicle absolutely drive me nuts. :blink:

 

I get rattles in front from two sources. The first is the area of the assist handle above the window on the A-pillar. The second is the little piece that sits on the dah just next to the little front quarter windows. When it is cold these two areas make noise. I don't knwo how to fix the first but for the second, I'll remove it and put some foam or tape to prevent plastic-on-plastic contact, which is the cause of the noise. Should have been done at the factory...

My Sharkfin works at least as good as the stock one. I have two other cars with standard whip antennas (antennae?) and the Sharkfin out performs them in bringing in the same stations. Go for it. I'm in the LA area, with lots of mountains. It fades out in the mountains, but so did the stock one.

When I rode in the back, I seemed to be able to isolate it very specifically to the top of the hatch, but armed with your heat shield suggestion, I will take a look at the shield and if that looks OK, try riding in the back again. I did notice at the time that putting pressure on the area surrounding the hatch, both above and below the hinge, had no effect. This was difficult to do in a moving vehicle with virtually no headroom as I lay on my side, trying to keep my head from hitting the window.
