Engine doesnt turn off

    I'm not sure there really is a location to measure it... instead, get a can-view to monitor all that stuff. FWIW, there are many times when my car will shudder to a stop at a light and yet not be in stage 4 after i start back up... your profile say's your from finland... whats the temperature been like there? with the way the ICE can cycle on and off, it's entirely possible that it cools down just below the s4 point. All in all, i'd say this isn't really something to worry about.

    The temperatures referred to by the stages guide are the coolant temperature readings.. You can buy a digital thermometer with a remote thermocouple and epoxy that to the engine water jacket and probably measure within a few degrees of actual temp, but the easier thing to do is probably tap off the water temperature thermistor as it enters the ECU behind the glove compartment- all you need is a voltmeter, and there's a conversion table posted somewhere of voltage vs. temp that you can print out and cross reference.

    Because these stages are controlled by the coolant temperature, it is also possible to spoof the sensor readings, which is something I've been experimenting with on my Classic Prius for the last year and a bit.. There are some gotchas that can cause MILs and codes on the computer, so it's not a simple matter of sending whatever reading you want to the computer, but done right, you can dramatically improve the first 5-minute consumption bar and shorten the warm-up cycle. If the cat is already hot, its only in this case that the computer will pretty much accept any value you give it, in which case, you can get stealth mode and engine stop with an otherwise cold engine.. I believe Ken from Japan posted something on an alternate method of spoofing for the HSD Prius temperature sensor..

    What is s4 temperature? The document doesnt tell. It just says, that once in s3, a full stop makes it to go s4 assuming ice turns off in the stop. Or mayby I missed something in the document?

    This country aint warmest place on earth. Highest outside temperature I can remember this problem occuring was something like F68.

    It sounds easy, but there is three real world problems in the voltage measuring.

    1. I dont know how to get access to the ECU wiring
    2. I cannot find diagram about the wires so I dont know which one is the temperature wire
    3. I cannot find the voltage to temp conversion table either


    I could borrow a temperature probe with long wire (for temporary use only) and a device to get the reading, but Im not sure what kind tape I should use to stick it to the jacket. Epoxy sounds like messy thing to use and I dont want it to stay there forever.

    just thinking about something here your's is a 2k4 question have you had any of the computer flashes done to the car since you bought it? because what your describing is how the wife's 2k4 used to run when it was new. Since the latest flash and I just checked it today, the car will go into S4 at 57C and 67%BSOC after a 9 block, 3/4Km drive at normal street speeds. Another question does the UK Prius have the thermos like the NA Prius? The ICE was at 57C and the thermos was at 54C it was at 35C when I started it up, Cold Soaked over night. When I left the shopping mall it was at 62C and I drove it for 14Km at about 85-1006Kmper hour and no stopping till I got 3 blocks from home when I had to stop and sit for 10 seconds before it would go into S4. Just a thought.
