Last summer, my 2005 Prius had an inverter coolant pump failure. Pump shorted, blew AM2 fuse, I unplugged the connector to the pump, replaced fuse, made it home.

I replaced the pump myself, and I was back on the road. I should have thought to check for a recall notice, but didn't. I replaced the pump with an aftermarket pump from Amazon. Dumb.

Well, it happened again. Same weird dash display, won't go to ready mode. Blew the AM2 fuse. Like before, I unplugged the pump, replaced the fuse, made it home.

Now- I looked it up, and my car has a pump recall on it. Question is- will the dealer spot the aftermarket pump, and decide to charge me a bunch instead of doing it for free?

I think the practice is if you have replaced the original pump, they will reimburse you the cost of part and labor if you have receipts..

I doubt dealership would replace your aftermarket part of free, but never hurt to ask..

You might also want check if this recall has an expiration date for them to reimburse or replace your pump..

Or call the dealership to confirm such recall still in effect, and see they would reimburse you for part cost.. if they are still doing reimbursement, then order a new OEM pump from dealership and send receipt in.. at least you will get money back for the pump you need to fixing your Prius.

That is a valid point, as I thought that recall was finished a long while ago.

I just called the dealer, gave the VIN, and they said we are good for the recalls. There are 4 actually. I clarified that I will not be charged. I didn't mention that I had swapped the pump. We'll see.
