perhaps toyota (and others) have figured out a limp mode, or way of warning that the hybrid battery is going to die before it happens?

i know the chemistry is different, but on electronics, there's an obvious reduction id capacity, and the same quick charge/discharge as prius with nimh.

Yes you would definitely notice a loss in capacity in a case were you have a large capacity loss.

We've been told much the same - but the BIG NEWS is that it'll run on normal Unleaded (RON91) or E10 - which was a major bugbear here - today that's $1.12 vs $1.27 per litre - except that some outlets only have 91 or 98 - and 98 is $1.43. Takes away most of the savings from having a hybrid.

Good to see that it'll brake under DRCC to keep speed. My PRIUS runs away down hills, something my previous Manual Diesels didn't to anything like the same extent. The Overtake Support sounds like it puts it in PWR mode momentarily - which could be good.

That is great news! It made no sense for it to require premium unleaded.

For Overtake Support, it sounds like it'll accelerate before you change lanes in anticipation (rather than the current system that waits until you change lanes and see a clear path before accelerating).

I can think of 2 situations I encounter regularly where that would hurt.

When I worked outside the home I would regularly on. 60 mph road signal a right turn early to enable others to change lanes as i slow down. If I am coming home the other direction in the left lane I regularly signal left and start slowing down just before a hill that hides my short left turn lane.

Yup smaller battery with Li-Ion, 4.0 Ah versus the 6.5 Ah NiMH cell. 259V battery. 208 HP net with the 2.5L 176 HP/163 Ft-lb torque. 118 HP MG2. LE still gets 52 mpg combine while the SE/XLE/XSE gets 46 mpg combined. Primarily because of the wheel differences: 16” for the LE, XLE and SE gets 18”, and XSE gets the 19”.

I’m guessing it uses the LDA camera.

Lexus Safety Plus already had a more advanced one in the LS where PCS will automatically steer (within the confines of your lane) to avoid the object. (E.g. pedestrian stepping into your lane on the right and the car hugs the left side of your lane to avoid contact). I assume the Toyota version is less advanced but I could be wrong.

2021 Avalon Hybrid received the same tank, but kicked up the net HP to 215. Probably to compensate for the 200+ lb weight gain and slightly longer, wider body. Same engine and motor HP as the Camry Hybrid but tweaked the output from the battery to 39 HP. Still gets 44 mpg combined for the XLE (17” tires) and 43 mpg combined for the XSE/Limited (18” tires).

Even with the 13 gal. tank their main cruising sedans get a respectable 580+ mile range on the XLE AvHy and the CamHy LE is looking at 680+ mile range. Not sure my bladder would hold up that long on either.

Specs on the AvHy can be downloaded here: 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid - Toyota USA Newsroom

if it gets 50mpg on the highway in mid winter, that works. otherwise, i will have to fill up before reaching fredericksburg.
does the 13 gallons include safety?

Yup TSS 2.5+ is standard across the board. You can get BSM with cross-traffic as an option on the CamHy LE as well.

The Clarity only has 7+ gallons. With 13gal, the XLE will have a range of 598 miles.

Odd these particular hybrids have lower City MPG than Highway or even combined. Only the AvHy XSE and Limited trims have identical mpg. Other Toy Hybrids usually have the highest MPG in city. They must have tuned the hybrid system a touch different or it’s a byproduct of using a 1.04 kWh Li-Ion battery instead of the typical NiMH 1.6 kWh.

    edited to include battery sizes.

Lion needs to charge more slowly when cold, but can charge more quickly and use a higher percentage of soc all the time. I know in my tesla if I charge it to a high percentage on a cold day it warns me regen braking will be reduced. really that is a small penalty for better performance most of the time.

That is just like the mild hybrids. This indicates the Hybrid system is too small for the vehicle.
