Keyless Remote

    Both of my keyless remotes stopped working within a few months of each other. The dealer ordered new remotes, but could not re-program them. Car still starts but remote door lock, unlock and panic button do not work.

    Dealer suspects that there is a problem with computer chip, but does not know for sure. He wants me to leave car for a day or so.

    Has anyone had similar problems?

    I am hoping that someone has had a similar problem although I suspect this is pretty remote!

    What year and package of Prius are we talking about here?

    Did you try changing the battery in each fob?

    BTW, if the Toyota dealer can't read directions or otherwise figure out how to program the fobs, take it to another dealer!

    Dealer examined the key. He ordered two replacement keys but could not get them to work. 2006 package #3

    You said the "stopped working" which implies they worked at one time then quit. I think the fobs are to new to have dead batteries unless the factory got a bad batch of batteries. You could try a new battery in one of them but most likely it is the electronics in the car. The odds that both fobs would quit are pretty slim. I think I would just take it to a dealer, hopefully a good one, and let them try to fix it. If they can't fix it call the Toyota customer service number.

    Something doesn't sound right. Although the keyless entry is covered under your basic warranty, it would be next impossible that both remotes would fail like this unless you dropped them in water, exposed them to perspiration or something similar. Also, what dealer can't program the keys?

    ok, now that thats out of my system... If it was the computer, one would think both fobs would have stopped working at the same time, not "withing months or each other". The fact that they can't program the two new fobs to the car would seem to indicate one of two things: either they're inept and you should take your car elsewhere, or there really is some problem with the computer. Up to you which one you try first, but either way the car needs to be taken to a dealer.

    So, did they try replacing the batteries in the fobs, or not? It's possible that either the factory batteries are bad or that the batteries in your fobs got run down prematurely for some reason. Replacing the battery is really quick, easy, and cheap so there's no harm making it the first thing you try.

    When I approach the car, both keys will have the liitle red light blink. So there is some juice in the battery.

    After one key stopped working I switched to the other; it worked fine for about three months and then died.

    Problem fixed. Dealer had to "cut" into old remote to manually turn system on. After this procedure, they were able to re-program remotes.

    What do you mean "cut into the remote"? I purchased 2 used remotes for my 2004, but the dealer was unable to program them. They claimed to have tried for over an hour, but could not reprogram the fobs. Suggested I buy new fobs, which they verified COULD be programmed to my car.
