Not sure if this is temporary or the water pump is done? I got Torque pro to check it and the code P261B came up for water pump problem. However, the 2010 Prius still drives no problem so far. The check engine lights stays on not flashing. No triangle lights come up yet and hopefully it won't come up. Do I really need to replace the water pump. I know our temperature gone up lately in California. I just used Torque pro to clear the code. I will start the car again and see what will happen tomorrow. How can I tell if the water pump is completely bad? I checked some youtube vids, its not too hard to take it off and put a new one in. But I just want to make sure I need a new one. Its $230 on Amazon.

I got 250K miles on it. The coolant level is on max. I usually take good care of my prius. Do most maintenance on my own. I will put my hands to the pump and see if its vibrates tomorrow day time.

Should I check the coolant temperature. I got the display for that in Torque pro. But I haven't found the display for the engine temperature yet? Where is that? Or should I check engine temp? What is the normal engine temp? and the coolant temp? I will report those numbers tomorrow day time

If you are getting the water pump code and at 250k miles, it's probably a safe bet there is something wrong with the water pump;).

I've replaced (or help replace) 4 of them and each time there is either resistance in the impeller or the casing has swollen, causing the impeller to rub on it:cool:.

Since the water pump is magnetically driven, you won't be able to diagnose much from the outside:whistle:.

So I'd look to replace it at the mileage you state(y).

    You need a waterpump.
Also get one gallon of toyota coolant.
Jack it up on the passenger side.

You can find an aftermarket pump for $125 on ebay.

Not doing this will have you freaking out and the car shutting down to prevent further damage.
You will not get a hot temp light.

10 year old pump with a lot of miles.
Have fun and be happy like she will.

yea damn...today its got worse. Engine knocking very bad when started. Torque pro detected cylinder 1 mis-fire. I used to have engine knocking problem once in a while but it wasn't too bad & no check engine light came up back then so I didn't care. Now that the water pump problem and the mis-fire really got my attention. Coolant temperature as follows, at night time, outside temp. 55F and driving in local road 25MPH, the coolant temp. stays around 138F. Day time when outside temp is 67 to 70F, driving on freeway 65 or above, the coolant temp. reached 190F. Do u think thats already overheating?

In conclusion, the main issue came down to the water pump? Water pump didn't pump coolant to the engine so it caused knocking and mis-fire?

It will overheat but has not, the pump is no good but still works somewhat.

Order it and get it done.

what do u think of the mis-fire? Is it caused by the water pump as well? I'm going to get the
Bar's Leak HG-1 HEAD SEAL Blown Head Gasket Repair from Amazon. Its got 836 reviews (the most reviews) this kind of product to seal the gasket if its blown and caused the mis-fire. Do you think that its good?

If you think you have a HG issue do it with the bad waterpump on.

The misfire could be as simple as the spark plugs or ignition coils.

Well starting to think I've a similar problem, temp up to 94 degrees today on the motorway before dropping back down to 90....normally rock steady 91 degrees never going over that. ( I use hybrid assistant every couple of weeks) think I'm going to get water pump as mileage is 205 thousand and be done with it.

Genuine official Assin water pump ordered, was going to get generic copy but opted for the better one, £243 as against £165 for the copy, amazon did have some cheaper options for ones but not in stock for 6 weeks.

water pump will arrive tomorrow, I will have it installed. I read more posts on here, it could be many problems. Blown head gasket is one of the major ones. I already got the Bar's leak from Amazon. Its got 843 reviews and it should seal it. I did a intake, egr, egr cooler, egr pipe cleaning in Jan. this year. I also changed the pcv valve. I also got new spark plugs 1.5 years ago about 40k miles ago. I ordered new ignition coils set of 4 too. I may do another major cleaning for the intake n the whole egr lines. but new water pump will be in tomorrow. And the bar's leak sealant will be in tomorrow as well. I will keep you guys updated.

Please do NOT pour the BAR leak in after you install the new water pump.

You will clog it and burn that water pump!

Use the stop leak while the bad water pump is still on and then go for a good drive with the stop leak inside.

Don't pour any of that crap in your coolant system, before or after the water pump.
Fix the problem, replace the head gasket...

Hhmm...let me think ... just woke up ... ill replace the water pump first and see what happen...im also skeptics about pouring this bars leak in. I also noticed coolant level gone down a lil bit even not driving. I remember coolant loss about 1 to 2 months ago for no reason but i didnt care much so i just top it off with some coolant mix. There was no engine lights on no nothing so i didnt care
