    WOW!

This is big news about Prius catalytic converter thefts (hat tip to the great title tho') and should be in the news section not FHOP.

Glad they got around to catching the hub of activity;).

Hopefully they round up the workers who were supplying the shop:).

Maybe it puts a dent in the illegal activity for a bit(y).

Thanks for the suggestion, that forum was the other end of my mental cointoss.

Edit- I put in a report to see if the thread can be relocated, on fotomoto's suggestion.

I see they're still pushing the story about the scrap value of the cats, and advising Prius owners to etch the VIN onto the cat as a deterrent.

    uh.....OK.

I agree... Esepecially when in his profile photo he has a cowboy hat on... I was thinking all his hard work visiting all the crazy cat ladies in his town was about to finally pay off.

One wonders why the dude had 2K cats in his shop when they say they're so valuable? Maybe the crooks that process the metals have been not buying from him anymore and he tried to blow their cover so they blew his?

    Yes, I know, overactive imagination...

Yeah, it is very rare to see cat pictures on the Internet so I was excited to see this as well.

Whoa I live in Elk Grove. Been seeing lots of reports locally of Prius cat thefts. Recently Elk Grove PD also had some free vin etching on catalytic converters

Thankfully my Prius and sienna are owned in the garage!

Do the vehicles ever venture out:whistle:.

If so, Cap City Muffler in Sac makes a good cat shield:):

While our Prime is kept in the garage at home, this gives a little piece of jobs when not just going from home to work(y).

...yeah, especially if your OEM cat gets cut off.

Put on a $200 aftermarket catalytic converter and a $100 cat shield and you're back on the road for less than $500..... :D

I've noticed quite a bit of Prius part out ads lately, most are complete vehicles with catic converter missing....
I really hate to see all these Prius been put out of commission because of theft due to high cost of replacement parts..

It may be wishful thinking, but state government should mandate a harsher punishment to individuals cought involved in and with stolen cat converters..
Especially in states like California, where you couldn't replace with a cheaper cat converter due to tighter emissions standards..

The Prius does venture off, usually for just short quick trips though. It does only take a few minutes for someone to steal it with proper tools.

How much is something like this? Easy to diy? It is a bit disheartening to see the people on ring/nextdoor posting about their cat thefts. Fortunately most are also a few miles away. The posts seriously are always about a Prius.

I remember a thief was crushed trying to steal a catalytic convert a year or so ago.

I paid $160 for the Prime version of the shield;).

They make them for all Prii:).

Held together with some rivets. Hardest part to do will be to get it in the air for the install(y).

Do you have any details about how they do the VIN# etching? I have a cheap little engraver and was thinking of putting my VIN# but would like to learn more about how others do it before I do mine?

Not too bad a price and doesn't sound too hard. Maybe I'll do it soon for peace of mind.

I don't know how they did it. I wanted to get it done when it was available but the date didn't work with my schedule. I am pretty sure the flyer I got stated the vin was etched as opposed to engraved. Engraving shield work perfect too, I'd imagine. Maybe even welding the vin on.
