Will the 2021 Prius Prime have TSS 2.0?

    I see that the 2021 Prius has Toyota safety sense to 2.0 (TSS). Have there been any announcements about the 2021 Prius Prime? TSS 2.0 is a big improvement for people who use Openpilot driving assist tools.

    No idea but it's a strong possibility given that the Prime is based on the Prius and usually follows with upgrades.

    Has anyone heard anything else on the 2021 Prime - estimated availability date, and whether TSS 2.0 in included?

    Interesting that's it's only mentioned on the LE. I wonder if the higher trims will have it. Sounds like yet another disadvantage of the 11.6 inch screen that is on the XLE and Limited trims.

    I understand the supposed reasons why it would only come to the LE and not the higher end models but I just can't see this happening in the real world. How they would give a benefit to a lower model is unheard of.

    I'm in the market and so torn on the LE vs XLE. I prefer the small screen and actual controls of various things but the benefits of the XLE might outweigh the negative of the big screen. The Softex seats, the smart entry in 3 doors vs 1, wireless phone charger, better seats in front (lumbar and power adjustments), charger lock etc... The only benefits of the LE right now are the smaller screen and smaller price. Add in Android Auto and I might be able to deal with the missing the other stuff, but those benefits of the XLE are pretty big.

    I own a 2017 with Softex and I consider that a MAJOR disadvantage. They are in fact so horrible that I had to cover them with cloth seat covers. They stain from just sitting on them with jeans, they are hard to clean, and they don't breath. Softex is just horrible stuff.

    Good to know. I've only used them briefly so they always seem so nice but over time they may be less than ideal.

    From what I understand, LE gets the Entune 3.0 interface whilst the XLE and Limited carryover with the 11.6” MFD from 2020.

    Yeah comfortable for most of the time unless you regularly get temperatures above the mid 70s. They’re not comfortable with shorts and while they’re not as hot or cold to the touch compared to leather, they’re sticky in the summer. I find them good at moderate temperatures and in the winter.

    The Canadian version of the 2021 Prius Prime will come with a 120V outlet on the base model. No specs on capability but you can read it here:

    WTH: no 120V outlet for the US?! Probably because of the litigation happy vultures that any USE (USE = User Stupidity Error) will turn into a class action.

    Also gets Android Auto on the base as well as a new allow wheel if you spring for the Prius Prime Upgrade with the Technology Package. Sorry Canada, still no Prime Remote apps.

    They have the heated steering wheel as part of the base model. Is that a carry over or is it new?

    I was going to comment here that Toyota.ca has the 2021 now listed, but guess you beat me to it. :)

    It is disappointing it confirms the expected that Prime Apps are not available. WHY? Other Toyota models have it and is in the US, so why not this model? Argh. (Same with my ‘14 PiP, the Info screen is pathetic with all those button spaces and only 2 are there (fuel economy & traffic, but I don’t subscribe to traffic...).

    As an Apple person and someone who was looking at the top package anyway, the 2021 adds little of value to me. Is there really that much added with TSS 2.0 over what it currently has? I think it is just the bicycle detection and “road edge detection” that differ? Not really worth the +$300 and worse financing rates, IMO, if a deal on a ‘20 can be had.

    I am curious about the obscure reference to the 120v outlet.... I assume this means there is a household plug somewhere in the cabin to plug in some kind of small electronic? Curious to see where this is positioned (hopefully not in the trunk), and also why this isn’t on US models, assuming that is true. I presume it will be on the lower back of the console, where I think the 12v was on earlier models?

    I am a bit confused about this though:

    “Also new this year, Prius Prime adds a smart key with push button start...”

    Didn’t the base model always have 1-door smart key and push button start? What am I missing here?

    120V outlet? That’s new. Sure it’s not 12V and a typo? Lol.

    The Prius gets rear USB charging but I see no mention of that for the Prime.

    Yes, 1-dr SKS has always been standard. Not sure why it was emphasized.

    Lastly, methinks the “unique” alloy is the 15” alloys found on the Prime/PHV elsewhere in the world (or the Prius Liftback FWD Technology in Canada).


    If you do highway driving, TSS-P 2.0 with the Lane Trace Assist is better compared to just LDW w/ Steering Assist.

    If not, the 2020 seems like a good deal.

    Huh you have to get the Advanced/Limited to get that.

    Could be, but I cheated and looked at the 2017-2019 interior pics for Canadian Prime. You have a 12V already in between the front seats. But maybe their copywriter confused the 12V 120W with 120V AC. Guess you’ll have to wait until they show up at the dealers. Was looking for the Specs for the 2021 but they haven’t showed up yet.

    Yeah it’s a good selling feature in Canada.

    We have the same setup as you - one 12V in the front with a USB/iPod connection and one 12V outlet in the rear. Apparently the 2020 Prime did get the upgrade and swapped out the rear 12V for 2 rear USB-A 2.1A charging outlets.

    No idea about the 120V. I mean, Toyota has been adding 120V outlets to their hybrids (it’s available on the HiHy Limited and Platinum trim levels and it’s not the wheezy 120W ones, it’s actually rated at 1500W). So it’s possible Toyota is adding a 120V outlet. If so, it’ll be in the rear.

    I agree, on second thought the 120v is probably an error by the copy writer, probably should have been 12v. Lol.

    Wouldn’t be the first time.... remember when the RAV4 Prime was first announced and the Canadian press release mentioned the battery size before soon being edited out? :)

    Agreed, it would certainly be frustrating for 2020 owners like yourself.

    Does anyone know if the 2020 still had the hardware required for connectivity? Is it only a software update that would be required? Hope so.

    Sort of like how Toyota added CarPlay to a few prior-model vehicles a year or two ago, I think Camry was one of them?
