You did check your manual for the requirements and limitations on file formats and locations, correct?

I did check yes, I think my USB sticks are AOK, the folders seem OK. Since my Walkman works perfectly using Bluetooth I haven't bothered with the USB sticks to be honest.

To anyone coming here and having the problem of the order played, what I've found on mine (lowest trim Prius V from 2017) has to do with the order in which the file is modified. When selecting a group of files to copy using Windows, it does something weird like copy over the first file, then the last file, then every file in between, or second file to the last file and then the first file, I forget. Whatever it is, it doesn't go from first to last.

A simple program call DriveSort allows you to force the sorting of the last modified time/date, by "short" filename or "long" filename, I think it's the "short" one that the prius pays attention to.

I'm moving from a 1GB to a 64GB, so I'll probably be going through this thread in more depth if(/when?) I run into problems with nested folders and files per folder.

Yes, the order is odd. I've got 4 MP3 players which each work differently sorting. 2 play in the order that I've loaded the MP3s, one seems purely random, the other is in some order (I think "TITLE", but that's not useful to me, as I haven't saved many items with that information. From what I gather, PRIUS plays them in the order that I've saved them.

Will a 64 work? I thought I'd read - could be wrong - that 32gb was the biggest? Or I might be thinking of some other gadgetry.

There is some information in your Entertainment Manual.

I don't know man, even the manual seems a bit confusing. Either that or I'm really just an old geezer at this point and I'm no good with technology at all.

We're not the only ones - try GOOGLING "ordering of mp3 files on a usb" - and there are 42 MILLION hits - all seemingly unhappy with what it does - many with how cars handle it.

Problem is - I used some regime so they'd play in order - and I then had to go back to the MP3s to fix them later.

Listening to say a Beethoven Symphony in random order is just WRONG.

I have given up on USB and come to the conclusion it's all just not good enough.

So after some persuasion I tried Spotify Premium. I get 3 months free before I need to pay a small monthly fee. However, I cannot complain the quality using an IOS device in the home or car is excellent. Also Podcasts which I really love is really excellent via Spotify. No more USB for me.
