ABS break pump failure

    I have been having breaking problems with prius v 2012 and the warning lights and the buzzing warning sound, I inquired from the TMC global data base using my Viechle VIN and indeed it's listed under the recall programme, it had four recalls and two were done in Japan, when i imported it to kenya it had two pending, one is the software upgrade of the Hybrid system, the other is the replacement of the break pump and motor actuator, I contact my local toyota dealer who first refused to do the replacements but after I insisted that i have checked on the global data base for toyota on recall my prius was qualified for the replacement they have now accepted to do the software upgrade but are still ignoring the replacement of the ABS break which is actually the main problem am having, how can i contact the Toyota head office so that i can get help? WHO knows the email Adress for the recall/ complaints department of the Toyota headquarters in Japan, that's the only way i can pressure these local dealer in Kenya to do the replacements. I would appreciate any feedback,and similar challenges and how they were delt with.

    In the US and probably there a 2012 Prius hatchback is eligible for a replacement brake booster assembly but the Prius v (Alpha) is not. The Prius v uses a different set of parts than a regular Prius of the same year and can not be interchanged.

    We are told to call 888-270-9371 with the vin to check for support programs or extended warranty.

    In the US the parts for a 2012 v are (prices typical)

    47070-12020 Booster Pump $913; Mcgeorge Toyota online; 696 Ebay used 164
    47050-47110 Cylinder Assy $1405; Mcgeorge 1072
    44785-02060 Gasket, Brake Booster $5; Mcgeorge $3.60


    Picture is my v during replacement of the parts with lower mile used.

    Finally the correct spelling is “brake”. Break means to “separate or cause to separate into pieces as a result of a blow, shock, or strain“.

    I replaced mine.....to bad parts had to be used because I sure wasn't going to spend close to $2000.
    My Camry (2002) 329,000 never had a brake problem... my 1994 previa 430,000 never a brake problem...just pads on both
    And I still drive both vehicles.... I have to keep a backup vehicle for when my v breaks down.
    Been driving for 48 years. Fords, Chevy's, Toyota and Datsun, never had a bad master cylinder.... until prius.

    Toyota has a redesign for all of the gen3 problems. Its gen4. However the brake booster is a special case on a gen3 v when Toyota refuses to include it in their extended service campaign. Even though all the other Gen3 Prii are included. It’s clear to me that it is a bean counter issue since the v’s different part numbers were sold in much smaller numbers than the hatchback. So when the cost analysts looked at it for the v it was a no go with emphasis on the no.

    Does that mean the replacement brake booster parts for the v are just as likely to break down again after replacement?

    It's that poor design. No brake components *I* ever designed have had problems like that.

    If you put new parts on the car its unlikely they would go bad in any normal use. If they are used parts, maybe you might be concerned when they have 175k on the parts themselves counting their used miles before you bought them.

    Mine seems to have failed around 75K miles (haven't gotten an official diagnosis yet, can't remember the exact mileage right now). So I guess my question is, did they fix the defect in the replacement parts, or can I expect them to fail after the next 75K miles?

    In your case it sounds more like years than miles. One mechanic suggested it could be the brake fluid but regardless the metal diaphragms in the pump modules give out dumping nitrogen into the system. I don't know if Toyota has made changes, usually you can find out with a dealer parts dept search on your vin's original part numbers versus current replacements. If its an updated part it should have a revised part number. The thing is new parts are uber expensive and especially the abs/brake-ecu/actuator/pitch-bounce-control is unique to the v.

    What are the brake symptoms? Mine started getting squirrely at 200,000... pump running all of the time.... replaced with Lexus.....supposedly 50,000 miles... $200. Master and Pump...

    It was a sudden permanent change in brake pedal pressure needed to stop and the response curve of the pedal to actual braking. It was as if the brake pedal did nothing for the first 50% of it's swing, then suddenly responded with barely adequate results. This occurred while driving. Simultaneously, the BRAKE, ABS, slip, and brake system warning (!) indicator lights came on. Now the pump that can be heard from the cabin pulses on and off every 4-5 seconds continuously while the vehicle is in READY. Found DTC C1391 (also P0302, but that doesn't seem related). Prior to this occurrence I had noticed the pump running with greater frequency. I also remember sometimes feeling a slow pulsing sensation coming through the brake pedal, usually while stopped or moving forward slowly and applying light braking. Both of these behaviors were not how the vehicle behaved for the first several years of ownership.

    Classic TOYOTA poor build quality symptoms.
    I've had the water pump, inverter, master cylinder and pump, traction battery, clogged egr system and a wheel bearing go out in a seven year old car.... and the trani has been making noises for 50,000 miles.
    Don't purchase a used 3rd gen.......

    My 2012 Prius C is doing the same thing, same 4 lights are showing in the dash, and the brake actuator runs every 4 seconds. The vehicle have 104,458 miles. I will replace the actuator myself once i have enough money to buy a brand new one, which is about $905.

    I think it's covered if the lights are on but I have a v. I changed mine myself but didn't have any lights... just the constant pump running.
    And I installed used one from a Lexus 200....... they are not the same v, c or prius. Not interchangeable

    What kind of noises is it making? and does it makes them when it's moving on when you change from park to anything else? also did you changed the transaxle fluid?

    I think there was a call from Toyota on certain models about that brake actuator failing too soon. I was thinking the previous owner of my Prius C did not changed the actuator when that call was on. Good thing you changed yours, my actuator has been running constantly at the very beginning after buying the car until a few days ago that now the lights came on.

    May i ask that if you bleed the system yourself after changing the actuator or you took it to a mechanic to do it for you?
