Yep, we're the same side of the Pacific Puddle - but quite a paddle to get to Japan from here. There was a stage where, in GOOGLE Maps we could put an address in Japan and it would give directions - starting with "paddle ...". They no longer do that - but this was from a few years back:

    490 hours!!! That's 20+ days.

It's pretty moist on the east coast of the US this time of year and nothing has burst into flame

I wouldn't recognise a UBER - I like the old days when you could recognise them:

Of course not...unless the cell phones also contained 10 gallons of gasoline...

Which makes me nervous; sure Tesla fires were bad enough, but the batteries on electric cars aren't also sitting next to gas tanks

I wouldn't worry - anything can happen - the batteries are tiny compared with the ½ tonne TESLA batteries.

Only one Toyota Plug-in that I know of has had a battery fire and it was NOT a battery fire but an electrical fire caused by salt water intrusion during Hurricane Sandy while parked at port before being sent to dealers. Some of the earlier battery powered cars like older i3s had electrical fires that spread to the battery. A quick search of the NHTSA, National Fire Protection Agency, and the National Insurance Institute databases shows no one was ever hurt or killed by battery fires as it takes several minutes to hours for any fire to actually get serious. Not like auto gas fires when gas hits a hot cat or exhaust pipes and ignites in seconds.

You are far more likely to be seriously burned and/or blinded by your good old fashioned lead-acid battery blowing up in your face than ever come across a live Li-Ion battery fire.

The one good thing about all Toyota batteries, including their Li-Ion, is they are all air-cooled. There is no localized liquid coolant to cause shorts between cells and/or compromise electrical integrity. So the odds of a “battery” fire is extraordinary remote, even in a horrific accident, and by the time the battery catches fire, you’ll have many, many other problems to worry about.
