I noticed a faint smell of petrol today and found the source. The fuel tank has a leak albeit a very very small one on the underside. I've not located the pinhole but I suspect as the tank is made of metal, that a temporary repair would be okay for a short period of time.

However, I'd like to change it but the gen1's are rare in the UK and I would be putting a 2nd hand, possibly low mileage, used part in. It would be 19 years old though!

So do the gen2 tanks fit? Or did Toyota redesign the mould of the tank?

I'm fairly certain they're completely different. Gen 2 (in the US anyway) moved the filler neck to the other side of the car.

Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 (again in the US) contain an elastomer bladder inside the tank, so it would need worse problems than a pinhole in the outer steel before it would leak fuel. But if I remember right, not every market got that.

Your right about the filler neck. Its on the left hand side. But the filler pipe on the tank is in the middle. Hmmmm

As to the bladder, thats not good news if thats the case for my UK model.

I'll do some more investigating as a simple fix may not be the solution.

Further investigation looks like the EU version doesn't have a bladder. Phew!

So quikweld for a short term fix and I will start looking for a low mileage tank for replacement.
