La Nina and Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation are both involved here.

The Hawaiian miss posted earlier was really impressive for a miss.

fortunately, forecasts are fallible. but one of these days...

who'd have thought we'd get a once in a hundred year virus?

A lot of folks in that field thought that it was well worth preparing for novel virus jumps in advance.

Moving back towards this topic, we have already seen interactions. FL closed COVID testing in advance of Isaias. Not having electrical service complicates many medical services.

we were just talking about electricity

no water, no light, no heat, no a/c, no electric car, no refrigeration, no tv, no internet,

we sure take it for granted.

don't hospitals have diesel backup generators?

I suppose hospital backup power is very common. But it may be incomplete and focused on ER, ICU and keeping fridges and freezers going.

For global hurricanes we are in a quiet fortnight now with just one embryo W of Africa that might not grow. If quiet times continue, forecasts will be blown and happily so. This is an unfortunate year for combo disruptions, natural and otherwise.

Near misses by spinny storms is good - keep 'em comin'.

    H. Laura arrives soon in Louisiana having strengthened rapidly in Golf of Mex.

From a distance, and not about to be flooded, one can enjoy its impressive image on rain radar and cloud-top infrared temperatures.

A little closer, I’m reminded of the disaster that was Katrina. Only now we don’t have,”Heck of a job Brownie.”

I suppose that many things will get knocked down in Louisiana, with minimum central pressure below 980 millibars the whole way. Coastal storm surge also notable with the word "unsurvivable" in NHC forecast. Not a word they often use.

There is always prepositioning of recovery supplies, but as recently as 24 hr ago Laura was much less energetic. So maybe not enough to cover needs. I have also read that suggested evacuations were not widely followed.

Calm my friend. Neither a statistical or model prediction is precise. In the real world, there is a probability of outcomes that often have a Bell curve of probabilities. We’ll survive.

My problem is the east-side is dragging a lot of warm, very humid air into Alabama, Huntsville. There are squall lines headed our way. FYI, I can see the hurricane clouds to the west.

My sympathies to those under the hurricane but we’ve seen derivative storms before. Passing North of Tennessee would be OK with me.

    H. Laura damage pix I've seen are mostly from city of Lake Charles. it is 40-ish miles inland and there is much less people stuff south of there. North of Lake Charles there is another patch of low population, and highest winds probably played themselves out south of Alexandria.

Eyewall (where highest winds occur) may have missed city of Orange on eastern TX border.

Lake Charles has (famous name) Chennault Airport which if open could be very useful for logistics. Air Force One landed there 2017 Sept after H. Harvey.

Initial damage estimates from H. Laura range from $12 to >100 billion. See some perspective on such things at:

Louisiana merits target of the year award for 2020. But Philippines is now getting the second of a double header and it's a whopper. Philippines is totally the wrong shape and orientation, for typhoons.
