    Hi Guys,

I started this thread to ask if someone had experience while Throttle body cleaning.

I decided to clean the IM and EGR pipe (as dealership advised me to replace IM and EGr gasket due to P0304 code) as it was showing P0304 code.

When I thought to clean the Throttle body plate, it was not moving (car was off and the MAF sensor power and Throttle body power was off/out).

So I cleaned from the front and the back with the TB cleaner .

Does TB plate should me moving freely irrespective of the power supply or it only moves when the power cable is attached ?

    Thanks for your suggestions.

You should be able to move it, it has a bit of resistance when pushing against it but it should move... Try spray some throttle body cleaner and then push on it..

    Hi ttou68,

    Thanks for your reply.

Should I keep the MAP sensor power off and Throttle body power off ?

    or

It does not matter while moving with bit force.

    and or

The car should be off or on?

    Thanks

In my Gen 3, car OFF is all you need. No fussing with anything else required.

If the car is ON, it has an angle where it wants the throttle plate to be. If you try to move the plate then, the car will notice and push back.

    Hi ChapmanF,

    Thanks for suggesting.
It means, no need to push theTB plate with force to bring it's back side to the front while cleaning, irrespective of power supply??

    Did I get you right??

    Thanks

The car must be powered off.

If the car is powered on, it will fight you moving the throttle plate, and you will not be able to move it.

    The car must be off.

    Hi ChapmanF,

Yes, the car is off, the Map sensor is disconnected, the TB power plug is disconnected. But the TB plate is not moving, kind of stuck.

    Is it fine??

    Thanks

There is a decent amount of force required to initially move the throttle plate from its closed(resting) position. However, once that spot is overcome, the plate can be held open fairly easily. Make sure that before you turn the car on that all connections are plugged back in. The car will run and drive if the TB is unplugged, but it will be battery only, and the car will be very sluggish. Don’t ask me how I know, LoL.

My recollection is opening it with a finger feels a bit like winding up a wind-up toy. It shouldn't really be much harder than that (with the power off!!).

Of course you push down on the side of the plate that is already down, and it won't move any farther than full open, when it is straight up and down in the bore.

It takes a firm push to get the plate to rotate.

    Again, car off.

And no need to disconnect MAP sensor or throttle body connectors.

To clean it thoroughly I like to remove the throttle body hold-down bolts/nuts and lift it right off. No need to disconnect coolant lines, they have enough slack. Torque values for those are 7 foot pounds IIRC. I'll verify and post correction in the morning, as needed.

    Dutch Uncle time:

No offense, but if you're stymied by this chore, and insist on disconnecting everything under the sun, and are considering doing the cleaning with the car on, maybe better let someone else do it.

Or at the least, just slow down and think through what you're trying to do, use common sense.

    Hi Mendel Leisk,

Thanks for your valuable suggestions. While cleaning TB, My car was off, coolant line were attached, instead of pushing the Throttle plate, I just loose it from the IM, and cleaned from the front and back of the plate.

    Thanks again.

    That's the way to go.

7 foot pounds (torque for the throttle body hold-down bolts) is pretty low, best to use a 3/8" or 1/4" torque wrench. And go in a criss-cross pattern, a couple of tightening stages.0

If you don't have a torque wrench, I'd just one-hand a ratchet wrench, like a screw driver, tighten semi-firmly. They're small bolts, and you're snugging the throttle body up against a compressible gasket.

    Hi Mendel Leisk,

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I tightened it using crisscross pattern but without torque wrench. (as I don't torque wrench below 10 Ft. lb).

    Thanks
