Our 2008 Prius started making a noise when the electric brake pump is running. In addition to the normal brake pump noise, we get a POP POP POP about 2 or 3 times a second the entire time the brake pump is running. It sounds like a plastic bottle or balloon that is stretching as it is being blown up too much, I'm not sure how else to describe it. The brakes are operating fine and no lights are on. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what it might be?

did you ever find out what was causing the problem? i have a 2008 with 125k miles and a single pop/click occurs when the brake is applied. regrettably, i am going into the dealership this weekend, and i'm hoping it is nothing to do with the power brake booster. thanks for your reply!

What did the dealer say? Our 2017 with ~60k miles is doing something like that.

I'm having the same issue. But the noises happen nearly constantly when the brake pedal is pressed leading me to believe the brake Booster has an internal leak of some sort and changing these is a pain. Can someone who fixed this confirm?

Has anyone ever figured out the cause of this noise? My 2008 has started to make the "pop, pop, pop" sound when the brake booster is spinning up as well. Only makes the sound when there is no pressure on the brake pedal. Most noticeable when the car is parked and engine is off. I have placed my hands on the brake lines and can feel the "tapping" or pulses when the popping noise is made. Could this be a stuck brake caliper or brake drum shoe?

I don't think so, because the calipers/shoes would not be applied when there is no pressure on the brake pedal.

I suspect there is a valve in the actuator that is leaking off pressure, not steadily, but when pressure rises to a certain point, and then "pop"ping it off.

Because in Gen 2 there's one assembly that has all the likely-suspect pieces in it, the precise diagnosis would be more a matter of curiosity than necessity. The pragmatic tech is going to replace the assembly and call it a day.
