Toyota recalls Prius hybrids for potential stalling issue | Autoblog

The company says in a statement that the hybrids are designed to go into a fail-safe mode if there are faults in the hybrid system. But in rare instances, they may not go into fail-safe and the engines could lose power and stall. Toyota says that power steering and braking would stay on, but at higher speeds, the stalling could raise the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the hybrid software at no cost to owners. Anyone who had an inverter failure with the system faults will get a new one, the company says.

The inverter firmware updates to our 2012 v Five did not have any measurable impact to MPG, FWIW. Much to my pleasant surprise, I will add.

I think GG707's recent thread is the first one I've seen where somebody claims to have actually observed a changed, observable parameter from before to after the reflash; even after asking whether anyone else has replicated that, still there's only the one.

I don't know GG707 or have any particular reason for questioning, compared to any other claim seen on the internet, but I would be more sure of that report if it were easier to verify, the 'before' values had been posted for the record before, etc.

Mine is subject to this recall. We'll see what happens.

If you want to contribute a little to the advancement of PriusChat science, you might see if you can pull some of those parameters GG707 was talking about, before going in, post screenshots or whatever here on PC in advance, then repost after the work.

At the very least you'll be able to confirm they did the work and the calibration version number changed. :)

you can read any inverter thread and find complaints about mpg's. sure, it's all anecdotal, but that doesn't make the owner feel any better

I'm not unconcerned with how owners feel. It's just that I'm also concerned with what the PriusChat community can reliably learn, which is a different question.

true, we haven't learned anything. but real testing of healthy cars is uncommon. mostly because when they are healthy, no one thinks it's worth the time or effort to do so.
then, when something goes wrong, we're left to comparisons from memory.

Which is why, if RAM v wants to contribute a little to the advancement of knowledge, there's an opportunity here.

But seizing the opportunity would involve a little bit of work before going in for the recall.

Along the lines of posting data logs from before [IMG] and after [IMG] going in for a steering rack campaign, or before/after measurements around an injector restoration. It can be done.

And if you kept good enough records of those and the associated independent variables (temps, wind speed/direction, traffic, speed and acceleration over course), you would be in a good position to report on the effect of a change with a proper confidence interval around it, once you had also a comparable volume of data from after the change, over a comparable stretch of time and conditions.

There was another similar thread over here where I went into more of that.

Nothing says you have to report all that stuff, but if there's any that you can gather in advance without it feeling like too much effort, it would be of interest to others.

I got one too. Thought this was already fixed with last recall.

I've had 2 updates and a repaired Inverter. I think this will be the 3rd update. Still a little Leary on longer trips.... and I have a fairly new traction battery.

    Defect Information Report

The cars in this recall are ones that weren't recalled the last time. They already had different control strategies. But it turns out there's a way we North Americans drive that wasn't accounted for.

I have my car in for a service the last week of August. They called to say that they needed the whole day so they could do the s
Safety Campaign Update. So looks like this fix is already available, at least in Canada.
