Yeah, that's right, I was using Google Reader for my RSS feeds. When Google discontinued the service my RSS died! Now, with all those smart apps, I don't feel the need for another reader. As for the Toyota Prius feed, I get any news faster here at PRIUSchat. LOL

A company Navtool apparently has a device to hook into the back of the radio to send CarPlay to the screen. They said they have a kit for the 2018 Prime advance.

    Self or audio shop install.

I have t done so I can’t speak to it, but looks interesting.

I wrote my email to toyota. Not holding my breathe. The NAvtool looks interesting, but they don't have a selection for the 2018 with 11.6. Maybe soon...

Can we start a Change org campaign for Carplay/ Android Auto? i feel like the only way to have a chance is to kinda call them out in public by comparing the Prius to other cars that have this build in already. Writing emails is a good start but i believe it wont do anything except fill a Toyota spam folder. if others Prius owner see that they are not the only ones wanting this, we can all show them together in a public way forcing a response. I would pay a one time fee to update their system to use Waze, Pandora, and not have to use there crappy nav and apps. They should honestly stick to making cars and not trying to implement there crappy app that have not been refine like the apps that have been out there for a while.

Mazda just released an upgrade kit to add Carplay/AA to their systems. For my CX9 it requires installing new hardware, $500 for parts and labor.

If the Prius also requires new hardware, there's little incentive for Toyota to do it, especially if a a whole new system is needed.

Would it be possible to buy the 2020 Prius Prime 11.6 headunit and retrofit it into my Prime 2017 Advanced?

Even if swap is possible, assuming the parts cost of the new 11.6 headunit is similar to 2017 model, are you willing to shell out $4K for parts plus labor cost for that swap?

Stopped at my local TOYOTA dealer where I previously bought a new 2007 Prius and a 2010 Prius. 6 months ago, he could not timely produce a new 2018 Prius Prime Advanced so my Prime was purchased in N. Virginia with no hassle and a great price.

Now that I have purchased a new full sized wheel and Michelin - behind front passenger seat on trips, a heavy duty electrical car jack & solid electric tire pump - plus modified the electronics to override the silly NAV lockout when moving - replaced all the silly white dash area trim with black - only thing still missing is CarPlay.

At the dealer (owner) said the charge was $/175 to install CarPlay. Recognizing the dealers in-depth knowledge of his products, I simply asked if he WAS SURE that was possible for the Prime He said “Indeed, we installed 2 yesterday in Camrys.” I asked if he could confirm that for my prime. He seemed flustered to be asked to confirm the CarPlay retrofit but called the SE Toyota folks and asked about CarPlay for Prime. Answer: No - maybe later.

The dealer appeared very confused as to how CarPlay can be retrofitted into Toyota’s less expensive than a Prime Advanced.

Obviously I can not create proper space for a spare or recover the wasted storage space in the back of the car but we should have a CarPlay solution for hundreds but not thousands of dollars.

Does Toyota actual hate the Prime they created?

We won't know for sure until some of us get our hands on a 2020 prius prime with the 11.6" touch screen. Some community members should be receiving theirs very soon, all they need to do is simply remove the unit and look at the part number to see it matches up. It's highly lightly that our equipment is compatible with carplay upgrade. Unless it's a hardware limitation, I have hopes that it'll be up-gradable through software.

If 2020 prime has carplay even for the base model, I can't see why we cant have it for 2017/2018/2019 model.

Lexus NX300 for 2018/2019 model, from the Lexus Forum, people download the image into USB and DIY to get carplay or pay $100-200 at the dealer.

I am hoping Toyota in US/Canada can do the same like in Lexus case.

I believe our Prime is using the worthless Entune 2.0. Do the models receiving and retrofitting CarPlay currently run Entune 3 not Entune 2.0? If that is the case, we may be out of luck.

Our Prius Prime seems to be treated as an unwanted stepchild by Toyota.

The thread is in here Lexus Enform 2.0 to update with Apple CarPlay - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

I am not sure if they are the same as for the prime head unit (doubt it since Lexus is more expensive) but we just hope Toyota will look after us...

While having my oil changed at the N Palm Beach Florida Toyota dealer yesterday, I saw a 2020 Prime (small NAV screen) that was waiting to have first oil change. It had a VA plate on it from the same dealer I bought my Prime a couple of months ago. Essentially no Primes down here other than purchased outside the SE Toyota Distributor Zone.

Other than seeing the 5 seat change and insignificant hubcap change- no other visual change. Of course even the base 2020 Prime comes with CarPlay.

I believe this is accurate, and is the reason why our older 11.6 inch screens (or anything running Entune 2.0) can't simply be flashed to include Carplay. It seems that as of now, the only real way to get Carplay on these older displays in an OEM fashion is to swap out the entire head unit as suggested above, which is wildly expensive as also suggested above. I've not seen anyone confirm whether this is even possible however, b/c it seems no one is willing to either 1) drop the $4-6k for the 2020 display unit, or 2) break open the dash on their 2020/newer display to confirm connector compatibility.

Why do you feel CarPlay is somehow tied to Entune at all? My son has a Corolla Hybrid 2020 which has CarPlay and probably doesn’t know Entune even exists.

    Because:

    1. This is what the service dept. told me when I asked about it, and
    2. Other sources like this literally say "Apple CarPlay is tied to the Toyota Entune 3.0 infotainment system": How do I install Apple CarPlay in my Toyota? « Serra Toyota.

I'm guessing "Entune" in the context of Toyota infotainment systems is pretty much the 'OS' that all the apps, like Apple Carplay, are running in or on. On my Prius I don't typically see the word "Entune" on the display when using it, but I suppose that doesn't mean it's not there.
