I agree, but they want over $200 for only the fluid itself.

Heck I'd do it for $80~90. $40~50 profit for an hour's menial work. Those guys are pricing themselves out of a job.

Why do you think they are charging over $200 for only the fluid?

Man I wish I lived near you then! Why do you think they are charging so much, it is outrageous.

Please keep in mind that Toyota (the mother ship in Japan) says that this service isn't required at all.

You are asking for a service that they feel isn't necessary. It isn't on the menu. It hasn't had the benefit of them even thinking about it because only a few people off on the fringes (sorry) even ask about it.

Remember, the Prius transaxle has no friction clutches or drums or anything like that. It will never leave clutch particles in suspension in the fluid. It is at least 99% easier on its transmission fluid than anything else on the road.

That said, I still personally support changing it once over the life of the vehicle, and wouldn't argue with those who would change it a second time. But at the same time I have to let the average Toyota dealer off the hook for not knowing what to do with the guy who shows up asking for this particular service, because they are literally blindsided. They were told nobody would ever ask for this, so I think it's fair to expect an #undefined response.

So they are clearly getting it wrong in their response to you, but you don't have to wreck them over it. Be gentle, buy some fluid from them (personally I would insist on the real-deal Toyota WS fluid) but it's okay to let some other shop do the drain and fill if you can't do it yourself.

How about the quote regarding the brake fluid change?

That sounds reasonable, if they really do it.

Yeah, I didn't really see anything wrong with that brake listing. That's something they do recommend, they are ready for, they are being reasonable about.

the brake fluid was $186 US? I'd counter $125 CDN, $150 tops. I did that, with my wife helping pushing the brake pedal, non-techstream method, again about 1/2 hour, 45 min's. And using about $15 (a quart) of brake fluid. Especially if done in conjunction with tire rotation (car on lift with wheels off).

You need to be careful here. They're going to ruin your transaxle. They're quoting CVT fluid which comes in a 4 liter container for about 100 bucks a unit. Your car does NOT use cvt fluid, much less 8 liters of it. It uses 3.8 quarts of Toyota ATF WS at about $9 a quart.. At this level of incompetence, I would be looking elsewhere for a mechanic to work on my car. Maybe they'll fill your brake fluid reservoir with engine coolant..........

I can't remember the last time I saw a dealer work order that had the correct fluid listed for a given service. It looks like nobody can figure out the point of sale systems so they just slug in generic line items and then let the techs figure out what is actually appropriate to pour down the funnel.

It's good of you to point out the mismatch here, but it didn't really catch me as odd because I've seen so many like it.

Toyota dealers around here don’t do brake fluid changes to many abs failures.

    Your car needs

    Trans fluid changed
    Inverter coolant changed
    Ac ecoil cleaned
    Front of ac condenser cleaned
    Engine coolant changed
    Water pump belt replaced
Spark plugs changed while in there replace valve cover gasket

Operation of the inverter pump should be checked periodically
By starting the car and taking off the inverter coolant reservoir cap and
With flashlight looking in the reservoir for good movement of the fluid.
Healthy pump with fresh fluid should look like it’s boiling which means aggressive fluid movement through the system if it’s hardly moving or sitting there the pump has failed or will fail soon. Very common.

Also many g2s eat engine oil from poor maintenance. Check the dipstick in the morning every few days before starting the car to get a sense of how much.

That reminds me, fwiw: 2nd gen repair manual does NOT have a non-techstream brake fluid bleed instruction (3rd gen does). Maybe 2nd gen is touchier.

But, he may have a point here since the quote is several hundreds of dollars and based on the quantity and price per line item. If the wrong line item (fluid in this case) is being quoted to me, this will drive the price way high.

Do you think this is why the price is hundreds of dollars because they are using he wrong fluid?

If you get the fluid from the parts counter instead of the service desk, you'll get the right item for the right price.

One reason, yes. They are quoting 8 liters of CVT fluid at $224, when it should be about 4 quarts of Toyota ATF WS for about $36.

The one problem you seem to have is that dang place. Get your own supplies, and if at all possible, DIY. If DIY is out of the question, sound out a few other places; it shouldn't be hard to find a garage more reasonably priced and capable of following instructions.

Attached are 3rd gen Repair Manual instructions for transaxle fluid change and non-Techstream brake fluid bleed method.

the service people at toyoda are on commission they sometimes lie all day every day. If you change water pulley belt maybe go for the gusto and change the pump see if it is leaking . If you change inverter fluid might as well change pump and keep good pump in car in case of failure. how many miles on car ? Brake fluid = turkey baster suck out old in resivour and refill every couple weeks maybe dont touch it at all.
