My daughter's 2008 Prius is dying and she is looking for a new car on a tight budget.

She is looking at a used 2015 Prius C One (two previous private owners) with 53K. Overall the car looks clean. Price is slightly high but not a rip off. My concerns are:

It seems like every time she accelerates the engine drones (loud). I know this is a trademark of most CV transmission but even at 35 trying to go 45? The 2008 Prius was the same but only under hard acceleration.

I notice some wind noise at 45 mph. What is it like at 65? Subjective I know but is just a matter of just turning the radio up? Do you find it comfortable for longer trips?

Have not driven on the highway yet. What is the car like merging and passing? Also hills.

    Any maintenance issues?

Could she put a trailer mounted bike rack on this car?

Overall I liked the car. Then interior is basic but probably a step up from a 2008 Prius. Seem well laid out. Missing some basic features (center counsel, backup camera, split rear seat) that are on the two.

Same engine between those two cars, but the '08 was heavier and had a larger battery to assist. So you might not have heard its engine working quite as hard, and the noise insulation wouldn't be identical- couldn't tell you which had more.

It's no different than any other subcompact hatchback we've operated at 65, but since the thing is graveyard quiet at low speeds the highway noise can stand out a little more.

It's slow. Very slow compared to other cars from the past 15 years, but keep in mind- there's been a horsepower war on for a few decades now. Everything is relative.

Some people will still feel nervous merging onto the highway, but that kind of fear is what sold a lot of 200+hp commuter appliances. Most people just get over it with practice.

Remarkably few. That's one area where this car shines. It was the second most reliable car overall, behind the Lexus GX. Technically that makes it the #1 most reliable car under $50k.

Keep the battery fan clean and do the rest of the maintenance by the owners' manual. Precious little else required.

The hybrid battery warranty is shorter for this model- and many of us do not expect the c battery to last as long as the liftback battery. Nobody really knows for sure, as the oldest c's are just this year going off warranty. But then, it's a smaller battery- in theory it will be cheaper and easier to replace when the time comes.

Yep, did that myself and it works great.

I have read that the split seat, cruise control & center console can all be transplanted from higher-trim c's into Ones.

Adding a rear vision camera isn't hard- retrofitting a modern stereo/navigation system to support said camera is dead easy on this model.

    Good luck!

Cost. Not in her budget. Also she wants a hatchback. For a Corolla that means a 2019 which is not in her budget.

Any pointers on camera idea? Would I need to replace the current system? This is a Prius 1 which doesn't have navigation and she is happy with a Garmin.

It might be possible to add a camera and make it work with the native Toyota system. I know that has worked in some other models with certain factory stereos but I've never properly researched this, don't want to give you false hope.

I can say from firsthand experience that if you choose to switch to an aftermarket head unit, the car is well supported by the gear currently on the market and you could expect such a project to come in on the low end of cost and effort relative to other cars.

Putting some detail on that, we deliberately picked a Two instead of a Three, this saved us about $2,700. Then we spent about $600 to get an aftermarket Sony stereo, which gave more features than the one included in the Three. I did the installation myself so that's a parts price.

For budgeting purposes I expect that could be knocked down to about $300 for a barebones replacement deck that still allowed for rear vision camera. You can use that to compare against your findings for making the stock Toyota deck work with an add-on camera.

Related tip: remove and stow the rear headrests for greatly improved view and less need for the camera. They go back on in a jiffy when you have pax back there.

    Hope this helps, good luck!

Another option would be to install a dash cam that has a rear cam also.
May take just a few days or weeks to get used to it.

Maybe it is just me since I never had a rev cam lol
But the "c" is so small without many rear blind spots so it seems to not be a problem like the reg prius.

I never use the radio and I am "in tune" with my "c" noise and sounds, never really thought it was loud,
maybe at highway speeds and maybe on cruise and having to climb hills
so maybe somehow test drive another if possible to see if the loudness is normal.

    good luck

There is a class one bumper hitch that bolts up to the 2015 C, I have one installed, and there are bumper hitch bike racks...

If I remember correctly, the 2015 C level one only has the am/fm/cd player, no touch screen...if so, be more difficult in changing the head unit with an LCD unit with touchscreen.

The 2015 One has a touch screen. I think that was one of the changes for 2015.
