Would it be better to run in HV mode before Charge Mode

Hey I'm not a bad driver, but I'd hate that thing looking at my driving.

To be very honest, I'm a much different driver in my Prius Prime than I am in our Bolt. The Bolt is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Off the line? you think the Prime is peppy? The Bolt has shamed some much fancier cars. That's my worry if I get the Tesla Y. Test drove it and was left with a big grin in my face. No nanny app for me.

My feeling is you can only go as fast as the car in front of you. Never really saw the need for ridiculous acceleration claims. As long as I can merge on the highway and pass a car if need be I’m good.

"Using only the electric motors, the Prime hits 60 mph in 12.2 seconds." "In hybrid mode, the run to 60 mph takes 10.2 seconds versus the EV mode’s 12.2"

This is what I meant to emphasize - I just don't see a very low score for flooring a Prius - ever. Sure you might not get 5/5 for acceleration, but I think the Prius is incapable of returning a 1 or 2 out of 5 based on the anemic acceleration.

If they measure G force, you can definitely get a spike between 0-30mph.

And even if they measure 0-60 time, when I floor it from an intersection in EV mode, I usually accelerate a lot quicker than the majority of cars that are accelerating at a normal leisurely rate.

When I'm first in line at a red light and the driver behind me is texting, I like to see if I can make it across the intersection before they notice the light turned green. I often win.

Slow acceleration when merging onto the highway is a big pet peeve of mine. I don't think slower acceleration should be incentivized. It's a huge hazard to try to merge into traffic going 10+ mph below the speed limit, when traffic is usually flowing at about the speed limit

I was dinged both times for goosing it a bit taking off from a light turning green. I think I was the victim of EV mode's advantage in torque "off the line". Just my guess of course. I never did my own 0 to 60 test but it sure feels EV mode has the advantage over HV mode "off the line". Maybe at the top end HV makes up for it but like I said I never really tested it.
FWIW the reason for goosing it one time was there was an Ahole behind me I could see was in a hurry and he decided the right turn lane was his personal passing lane. I thought I might give him a short run for the money off the line and I did hold my own until I reached the 35 mph speed limit where I let him pull ahead. I figured if I pissed him off he would tail gate me until the next light or pass me illegally. Not worth it to me.

For these insurance programs, the cut off for hard acceleration, and deceleration, is around what is used for the EPA tests, which would be 18 seconds to reach 60mph.

If I'm stuck behind a slow car and they get out of my way, I accelerate as quickly as possible to get up to a safe speed that matches the flow of traffic. And in some places, poor road design necessitates quick acceleration to match the flow of traffic. There are a few cloverleaf intersections here that are way too small, so you have an extremely short distance to go from 25mph to highway speed. Slow acceleration is a hazard to everyone else on the road, even though it rarely makes the driver or their insurance at fault for an accident.

I think better metrics would be how well a driver stays centered in the lane, and how much following distance they leave. That would be easy to track with a camera and some computer vision software. I think there are dash cams with lane departure warning and forward collision warning built in.

@schja01 I firmly believe letting the gas engine complete it's warmup cycle before putting a load on it is helpful.
Exactly how helpful is another question.
One other comment about charge mode, It only takes approzimately 30 minutes to recharge the gen1 prime pack from 0 to 80 percent of the pack working range. That is almost 4X the normal 2 hour charge time when charging at 220 volts.
Personally, I wouldn't worry much about charge mode being faster than plugin charging, but rather just one more variable
to keep in mind while using the features available with the car.
