What does this have to do with the Prime, you ask? Well the Outback as a suspiciously similar MFD spec as the Prime (and Prius Limited) - vertically oriented 11.6” screen. So if Subaru is updating the software to allow CarPlay in portrait mode (and I assume Apple also had a hand in it to allow iOS to push that layout through), then there’s a possibility that our Primes will have the ability IF Toyota wants to update the software as well.

What are all the benefits of portrait mode? I understand bigger google maps but anything else?

Typically for navigation (regardless of software you're using), it allows the user to see further down the road vs. landscape mode that shows more side streets or parallel streets.

I guess it's also takes up less space on the passenger side. A large landscape screen would mean mounting it higher (like all the other screens) or making it squarer rather than "widescreen" to make it fit within the width of the vehicle interior.

That's all I can think of.
