What is your primary ride for errands and work?

Not sure pure hybrid would be considered blended combustion engine and electric? If it is, our household has been on this mode since my first hybrid.

 

That's all we have in our household since 2017.

A Prime and an RX450h currently.

But as for the future?

Options will be plentiful.

 

Yeah, my question is "a pure hybrid like regular Prius considered to be blended combustion engine and electric?" They use only gasoline for the energy source. No electricity from the wall.

 

I'm thinking that since there is a battery, it propels the car electrically at least some of the time.

Or that's how I answered the poll above anyway.

 

100% electric these days, i'm towing around a boat anchor, and burning petrol just because...

 

Walking - 1st choice (live in a small town for distances less than 3 miles)

Bicycle- 2nd choice (distances below 5 miles)

Plug in Hybrid - 3rd choice.(Grocery shopping- taking kids to and from school- general running around town where you need a vehicle)

Combustion powered vehicle (When going on vacations and for long distances where comfort, room and ability to drive long distances is important)

 

The Prius is the primary vehicle here since we're in the hot desert and it's anywhere from seven to twelve miles to go shopping, get reasonably priced gas or see a doctor. Like John, we are using the gas powered vehicle (2009 Acura MDX) for hauling visitors or we need the comfort. Our girls are now 5'9" and 5'11" so the Prius is a bit cramped and uncomfortable when we all go.

We are actually thinking about getting a little less green and buying a used pickup and travel trailer. My wife is no longer up for taking the Prius on our cross country trips and we want to avoid hotels and restaurants for a few years if we can. Nothing extravagant; just something that gives us our own bed, small kitchen and a bathroom.

 

You'll need to check the weight label or manual, but a quick internet search says your MDX can tow 5000lbs. There are trailers that weigh under 4000lbs when loaded with gear and water.

 

I know but the older MDXs have a lot of transmission problems. Especially overheating, even with the added transmission radiator on the front. With over 170k miles on it and the fact that most of our long-distance travel happens in 90-115*F heat we aren't going to be able to trust it for that job.

 

Then every Honda I've seen towing had a case of saggy nice person with the rear wheels out of camber. I've crossed them of my list of potential "truck" for down the road because of that.
Was the truck going to be a replacement, or an in addition too?

 

Main car for work is a 2019 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports 1.8 HSD.
Currently it sits at 42.000km (26250 miles) and counting. Due to Covid I drove a bit less the past year, normally it is about 34000 miles per year.

 

We pay cash and buy used so replacement or addition really depends on what we find for the price when we're ready to buy.. The MDX has a third seat with both comfort and room inside. If we find the right deal we could do alright with a crew cab and leather interior as an MDX replacement.

I'd prefer to also have 4WD on the truck if it's a replacement so we can use it on some of the trails like Christmas Tree Pass out here. If it's an "in addition to" vehicle I'm fine with less luxury and 2WD. Better gas mileage on long trips and a little bit better towing capacity given the same engine.

Getting rid of the Prius is not an option either. Our youngest is going to be starting community college soon and the schools (she has two to choose from) are either 14 or 25 miles away. She doesn't like the idea of driving a large vehicle and there's always that little pesky thing called gas prices. The MPG will make a real difference in her expenses.

I really, really, REALLY hate driving cars nowadays. If I had my choice -- and if I felt better about the "footprint," our 2019 Outback would be my ICE choice, because it truly seems as if it would "give it's life" in a serious collision.

My '08 Prius is like an old lover. I have some mixed feelings. It is and always will be one special. And, I use it mostly now. But would truly love to get back to my bike. Hmm. I could ramble on, but basically wish I were able to use the bike more -- wish I felt more comfortable driving, but if you pressed me, truly, the Outback is the new ride -- and not because it is new(ish).
