Cruise Control Switch

I don't know if you're suppose to actually hear a "click", but does the cruise control actually work? The clock spring has nothing to do with the feeling of the cruise control button.

 

The cruise control stalk rarely has any issues. It's more likely to be your clock spring (if it's been replaced with a non OEM part previously). When the clock spring goes bad, normally there would be other buttons on the steering wheel that won't be working properly (like the air recirculation button and volume buttons)

 

Before you get too carried away......check the brake lights to be sure that that brake switch is not stuck ON.

 

No, it doesn't click. It just presses in and toggles the Cruise Control on and off. Your description of "spongey" sounds about right.

 

Its a very definitive mechanical click when you push it in not spongy at all. You can hear it click when you push it in.

If all the radio button and cd buttons and all the ac buttons work on the steering wheel work its probably not the clock spring.

 

Mine does not click. It has kind of the feel of a rubber membrane bubble button, as so many things do nowadays, like the keys on this keyboard ... not clicky really, but with a subtle sort of pop that you feel on the way down and the way back up.

My experience with things with membrane switches when they stop working isn't very encouraging for trying to judge by the feel; in most cases I've known, they still have the poppy feel, they just don't work anyway.

If you have access to Techstream, I believe you can watch the switch inputs to the ECU as you press the button, move the stalk up and down and toward you, and see which signals are getting through, if any.

 

Doesn't work like that on mine at all.
No click on any Toyota I've ever owned, about 6 of them.

 

Sorry let me reword that there is not a latching click per say as it does not latch it’s a momentary switch but when you push it it’s a nice clean mechanical click to it not spongy at all.

 

YOURS does that. MINE does not.
At 13 years old, maybe yours is wearing out.
Or maybe the design has change slightly over the years.
I just went out and tested mine.
No click......unless you stab it REAL hard.

The ignore user function is a good one.

 

Mine is the same as described by ChapmanF and like SS2 I have driven other models of Toyota with CC and the stalk and switch seem identical, right down to the tactile feel. Maybe Ray's is just like new seeing as he says it's never been used in 13 years.
